Never mind the Ph.D. and middle-class trappings– Laura Pritchett is a Dumpster diver and proud of it. Ever since she was old enough to navigate the contents of a metal bin, she has reveled in the treasures found in other people’s cast-offs.
For Going Green, Pritchett has gathered over twenty writers to tell their personal stories of Dumpster diving, eating road kill, salvaging plastic from the beach, and forgoing another trip to the mall for the thrill of bargain hunting at yard sales and flea markets. These stories look not just at the many ways people glean but also at the larger, thornier issues dealing with what re-using–or not–says about our culture and priorities.
The essayists speak to the joys of going beyond the norm to save old houses, old dishwater, old cultures, old Popsicle sticks, and old friendships–and turning them into something new. Some write about gleaning as a means of survival, while others see the practice as a rejection of consumerism or as a way of treading lightly on the earth.
Brimming with practical and creative new ways to think about recycling, this collection invites you to dive in and find your own way of going green.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells- A True Alternative to Gasoline?
August 30, 2010 by admin
There is present and future fuel alternative that is certainly gaining more notoriety. Hydrogen fuel cells are a potentially great way to address two of growing energy concerns in America today, including those living in La Selva Beach homes. The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and lessening our dependence on foreign petroleum resources is extremely important. Hydrogen can be produced from abundant and diverse domestic resources, and the fuel cells in production and development can provide a clean and efficient way to use this energy. Together they represent an extremely different approach to energy conversion and transportation.
FCV’s or fuel cell vehicles are propelled by electric motors. However, unlike battery electric vehicles, which gain their energy from an external source, FCVs create their own electricity. Just think, as you’re driving back to your La Selva Beach home, you’ll have both a clean fuel source, and the power you need to get the job done. The onboard fuel cells create electricity through a chemical process that uses hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the air. The fuel is stored onboard in high pressure tanks. In addition, with the help of a “reformer” device, fuels such as natural gas, and methanol can be used after they have been converted to hydrogen gas. These vehicles are quiet, offer little emissions into the air besides water, and heat. In addition, their efficiency has been shown to be at least twice as comparable combustible vehicles.
In 1999, the members of the California Fuel Cell Partnership started to make progress towards creating and maintaining a commercial market for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. By 2008, a total of 250 fuel cell vehicles were driving down California roads, and refueling themselves at 25 stations scattered throughout the state. California is one of the first states to recognize hydrogen as an alternative fuel source, and subsequently began the regulation process to enable retail sales of the fuel. In July of 2008, members of CaFCP published a unifying vision for the expansion of hydrogen stations and fuel cell vehicles between now and 2017.
At this time, automakers project that thousands of fuel cell vehicles will be available for California consumers by 2012, and the earliest examples will undoubtedly be constructed using both private and governmental funding. With the expected increase in fuel cell vehicles on California roads, an estimated $90 million dollars could potentially be spent to create the necessary infrastructure by 2013.
In a conference at the SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit Michigan, people from Nissan, Toyota, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will most likely be an important component of the nation’s transportation by 2050. The main reason for this delay is the fact that a new infrastructure must be created, or the old one needs to be drastically changed in order to incorporate hydrogen as a fuel. In addition, because of hydrogen’s volatile nature, safety is of great importance. Thankfully, state of the art materials and techniques have made the fuel cells some of the safest sources for power on the grid today.
Making the switch to alternatively fueled vehicles is just one way that you can make sure that you grow, and the environment is preserved. Making the right choice for you is dependant on a number of factors, including the availability of the fuel, performance of the vehicle, and your desired impact on the environment. Before making any decision, do the proper research, and chances are you’ll make the right one for you.

Ford Electric Car – True Story Revealed
July 12, 2010 by admin
One of the best known car manufacturers worldwide is the Ford Motor Company. As one of the largest car companies, they have been in no rush to get into manufacturing the electric car market. Due to consumer demand, an electric car was manufactured, placed on the market and sold by Ford – a cleaner, environmentally friendly car producing less pollution and no greenhouse gas emissions. It was their first version of an electric car.
Called the Think City electric, Ford produced many years ago, and a lot of people were keen to take advantage of this new vehicle. It was pollution free and more energy efficient than a fuel powered car. The United States have very rigid standards about the road safety of vehicles on their road, so the Think City electric didn’t meet those strict standards. Ford had to cease production of their first prototype and as a result many of the cars were returned once customers had reached the end of their leases. The cars were then crushed as they couldn’t be sold in America. So Ford no longer market the Think City cars, although a few can still be found.
Ford have now implemented and produce hybrid electric cars after much research. These mostly run on battery power, as well as being able to use gasoline power at the touch of a switch. Many of these electric cars can be seen on the roads. As a leading manufacturer of electric cars in the industry, Ford decided to branch out and produce electric vehicles such as Ford trucks, mini-vans and the SUV’s, rather than limit their production to just electric cars.
Ford mostly produce electric cars of the hybrid version to meet safety standards, but abroad you can find Ford brand electric cars. Many countries do not have as rigid safety standards, so the electric car can be seen driven by even more people in countries such as England and France.
Some people may be disappointed that Ford had to move from producing electric cars to hybrid vehicles, but as they weren’t able to meet the safety standards, there was no choice for the company. As a result it was more cost efficient to produce a more environmentally-friendly vehicle to cope with their customers’ demands, than it was to keep the electric cars on the road and try to meet the safety standards.
Ford do continue to listen to their customers and are trying to come up with a suitable model for an electric car. As leaders in the industry, it may only be a matter of time before they can replace the hybrid version with a new exacting Ford brand electric car. Customers will have to wait and see what comes up in the future. With the fast pace of modern technology, it could be possible.

converting your car to electricity, Is It True?

Every day people just like you are converting their cars. Thousands of successful electric car conversions around the world are proof that this technology works!
Here are just a few reasons I believe you should convert your car to run on electricity:
You will save hundreds of dollars every month on gas costs. It costs about $1 to charge your electric car, and you can travel up to 100 miles on a single charge.
This is great for our environment and your children will thank you for it.
The government will give you taxation credits for driving a clean fuel vehicle. To encourage the reduction of global warming and pollution, the government is giving taxation credits to people driving a more environmentally friendly car.
By now I hope you’re realizing the amazing benefits of an electric car, and that it’s definitely possible for you to build your own electric car, easily and at a very reasonable cost, but you might be wondering:
Aren’t electric cars slow?
Absolutely NOT. If you think driving an electric car is like being in a slow old clunky golf cart, think again.
P.S. Just think! In a matter of minutes you will be on your way to converting your car to run on electricity. Close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine driving 100 miles for less than $1, no longer pumping toxic fumes & greenhouse gas into our environment, and receiving up to $1,000 in tax refunds from the IRS, for driving an environmentally friendly car.
It’s all possible when you make a small investment in the Electricity4Gas manual.
