Hybrid Electric Vehicle Power Systems Receive Major Upgrade

A leading company specializing in the design and production of materials for electronic thermal management, now uses AlSiC (Aluminum Silicon Carbide), a metal matrix composite ideally matched for base plates material for insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), used in power control, high-power traction, fly-by-wire applications, and Hybrid Electric Vehicle power systems.

The low isotropic coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value of AlSiC-9 (8 ppm/°C: 30 – 100°C) is compatible with the thermal expansion value of the substrate or die used in IGBT power modules. The AlSiC CTE match lowers the mechanical stresses on IGBT die and substrates that are introduced by thermal power cycling, improving dependability of substrate attachment and reducing die cracking failures.

The device compatible AlSiC CTE removes the need for stress compensation material layers which are required in Copper (CTE = 17ppm/°C) baseplate assemblies. Removal of stress compensation materials simplifies baseplate assembly and decreases thermal resistance for AlSiC systems, meaning AlSiC systems have equal or improved thermal dissipation over Copper baseplate assemblies.

In high power applications (> 1200 V/ 400 A), IGBT modules assembled with AlSiC baseplates are found to have a service reliability of many times more thermal power cycles over Copper equivalent systems.

AlSiC is a lightweight material (1/3 that of Copper), which makes it an ideal cooler material for the weight-sensitive IGBT applications. AlSiC has higher strength and stiffness than Copper, which, combined with its lightweight nature, makes AlSiC assemblies more tolerant to shock and vibration.

The CPS AlSiC near net-shape fabrication process both produces the composite material and fabricates the product geometry, creating the design of IGBT base plates with a dome profile. This geometry improves thermal interface contact with cold plates and coolers. CPS fabricates standard of 190 mm x 140 mm, 140 mm x 130 mm and 140 mm x 70 mm base plate formats (shown) as well as custom formats.

How Do Hydrogen Fuel Systems Work

July 16, 2010 by

Alternative sources of fuel are of interest not only to high class research firms but also to the average consumer. Rising gas prices have forced everyone, save the extravagantly rich, to make sacrifices and find new ways to power their vehicles. The widespread desire to save on gas has led to the increased purchasing of hybrid and electric cars.

For those that do not have the ability to switch vehicles, improving current transportation’s efficiency is the only option left. To date, the most effective way to drastically increase gas mileage is to install a hydrogen fuel system, which employs only water to function.

Hydrogen is created through the electrolysis of water. Electricity is taken from the car battery and used as the catalyst to stimulate electrolysis. The hydrogen created burns much more cleanly than regular fuel and increases the efficiency of gasoline. Only about twenty percent of the energy released by burning gas goes in to moving a vehicle; the other eighty percent is lost to heat and other energy forms. A water system enables the engine to harness more usable power. When people think of alternative fuels, gasoline is never on the list. However, if the fuel could be made to work at nearly one hundred percent efficiency, there would be no oil crisis.

The benefits of installing a hydrogen fuel system in to your vehicle are numerous and significant. Improved gas mileage is the first and most obvious advantage. Helping the environment is vital as well, as a destroyed ecosystem is harmful to everything, including humans. Your engine will last a lot longer, as water is consistently rejuvenating to it. Minuscule amounts of water need to be used; in fact, you can use the same liter of water for months, as water contains thousands of times more energy than oil. Finally, one will notice a considerable decrease in noise and an increase in driving smoothness, which are signs of how excellent the water system really is.

Initial costs for constructing and installing a system vary, depending on whether you purchase a conversion kit and/or pay a mechanic to perform the installation for you. At the lowest level, conversions can run as low as one hundred and fifty dollars. Of course, the fuel for the system, water, does not cost any money at all. Installation is safe and does not void a vehicle’s warranty, and a water fuel system can be removed at any time for any reason. One usually saves more than they spent after only a few months of water fuel utilization.

Like with any innovation, there are critics of using water for fuel. Some say that the process violates the laws of physics; that because energy in equals energy out, there is no way consuming water could yield any positive results. Recall that the ultimate purpose of a water system is to increase the efficiency of gasoline. Water cannot be used for fuel alone; it needs to be paired with gasoline.

In any case, it is clear that hydrogen fuel systems are effective, as hundreds of thousands of people have already invested in conversion kits. In fact, it is predicted that within the next decade, a majority of vehicles will come standard with some kind of water fuel system, thus easing many countries dependence on oil.

Could Hydrogen Fuel replace the need for gas and oil?

Warehouse Control Systems Impact Green Distribution Centers

July 10, 2010 by

Warehouse control systems must address numerous challenges from multiple angles and perspectives, but if these are met they can produce benefits including a greater return on assets, increased operational capacity, reduced labor costs, increased inventory turns, an increase in picking and shipping accuracy, shorter process cycle times and improved customer satisfaction.

“Whether under the umbrella of lean efficiency, sustainability, green warehousing or conservation The QC Enterprise produces some benefits that allow for tier one distributors to become more green and  eco-friendly,” according to QC Software’s vice-president, Jerry List.

The role of warehouse control system is critical in ensuring increased pick accuracy which translates into more efficient use of energy and resources.  Additionally, the scalable or modular nature of the WCS allows the investment to be cost-justified in both the short and long-term. It can adapt to a legacy system now and a green (or greener) system in the future.  List suggests, “When distribution center operations evolve because of environmental and ethical pressure, the QC Enterprise will adapt as well as provide a cost-effective solution.  Since supply chain and distribution budgets are being stretched by the high cost of fuel, a WCS eliminates costly inefficiencies, which will improve the bottom line.”

The WCS solutions provided by QC Software enables companies to streamline their warehouse operations with the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry ensuring increased corporate profitability.

QC Software is the leading provider of Tier 1 warehouse control systems to the warehousing and distribution industries.   Since 1996, QC Software, utilizing state of the art technology combined with extensive research, development, and rigorous testing, has developed the QC Enterprise suite of products.  Designed to be modular in nature, easily configurable, and platform independent, this highly scalable solution satisfies the needs of any size warehouse.

Air Liquide to Provide Transferable Hydrogen Fueling Systems to Gm U.s

June 7, 2010 by

An auspicious alternative fuel solution for motor vehicles is yielded by using hydrogen as a transmitter of energy. Hydrogen is utilized in a fuel cell and combines with oxygen in the air to be able to produce electricity to supply power to the vehicle, with water as the only emission.

Air Liquide is manufactured to enable the hydrogen energy infrastructure. It is closely working with partners in the private and public sectors while helping to transmit hydrogen energy technologies from the planning papers to the real world. The group is actively developing the whole supply chain of the hydrogen energy. The process of developing the chain starts from producing hydrogen, to making fuel cells, then to solutions development, and then to the distribution of hydrogen to end users.

Air Liquide Advanced Technologies U.S. LLC has been chosen to supply five, 700-bar, transferable fast-fill hydrogen fueling systems to General Motors in the U.S. Nonetheless, GM can also opt to acquire an additional of two systems. To be operated by the end of 2007, the portable fueling systems will be built in North America with proprietary engineering designs from Air Liquide’s Advanced Technologies teams.

As regards using hydrogen as energy, this is Air Liquide’s second collaboration with GM. Air Liquide is also working with GM in Canada where it installed a fueling system at GM’s Cold Weather Testing site in Kapuskasing, Ontario, which is intended for hydrogen vehicles.

Pierre Dufour, the Executive Vice-President of Air Liquide Group, and at the same time president and CEO of American Air Liquide Holdings, Inc., said that their agreement with General Motors is one of the ways in which Air Liquide is contributing to overture the use of hydrogen as a source of energy as well as an alternative solution to power the cars that will be launched in the future. He added that they very honored to have collaborated with GM on this project.
