Are Future Sports Cars Hybrids?

Gas prices are $3/gallon, wait no $4/gallon, wait maybe even as high as $5/gallon? You’ve got to be kidding me. When I started driving it was only $1/gallon and that wasn’t all that long ago at all. We can blame politics, war, economics, or any number of things, but if you’re like me you want relief now. Higher fuel efficiency can’t come fast enough.

Of course, not everyone wants to drive a tiny little Prius. Lots of drivers want both fuel economy as well as maybe a little bit of fun. Of course, if you drive a sports car, then you should get ready to spend a lots on gas. Most of the time fast cars means terrible fuel economy.

For most of us, there is no way we can justify driving a fast, sexy car like a Camaro or Mustang. For the average Joe, it just makes more sense to drive something like a Honda Civic. The Civic provides much better gas mileage than the average sports car. Yet why do people still drool and save money to buy a sports car? Perhaps they lust for speed, but then again, if the speed limits on most highways is 65 miles per hour or maybe 75 miles per hour, having a vehicle that can go up to 150-200 m.p.h. just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense does it?

In the last few years a technology known as Hybrid technology is being uses more to create energy efficient automobiles. These cars are designed to be light, intelligent, and economical. They utilize a combination of both a gas and electric engines to maximize fuel efficiently.

Most hybrid vehicles are designed for city use driving. Where vehicles in the past would get 25-35 miles per gallon in the city, vehicles like the Toyota Prius get an astounding 48 m.p.g. in the city and 45 m.p.g. on the highway. At a time where gas prices are spiraling out of control, doubling your vehicle’s fuel efficiency is a great way to save some money.

The major complaint of course with the Prius and hybrid vehicles in general is that their engine, is small and slow. It’s not so bad to drive in the city, but getting up to speed on the highway takes a while. Nobody in their right mind would declare the Prius to be sporty by any stretch of the word.

However, car manufacturers today are now opening up a new line of hybrid cars. A kind of hybrid sports car. These hybrid cars are designed to achieve high amounts of speed but at the same time, take advantage of fuel saving hybrid technology.

Probably the first big hybrid sports car could surprisingly come from Chevrolet. It is called the Chevy Volt. It’s a mostly electric car designed to run for a whole 40 miles without using any gas at all. After that, the vehicle becomes a gas/electric hybrid. Since the average person only drives about 40 miles a day, the vehicle could run most days purely on electricity. Chevrolet estimates that the vehicle could average about 150 miles per gallon. Yet, at the same time the Chevy Volt looks quite sporty. No word has come from Chevrolet about how fast the Volt will go and what kind of horsepower it will achieve, but it will be a big step forward for the hybrid sports car for sure.

Mileage per Gallon

Sports cars are built for speed, not comfort. Some prefer to drive in the fast lane watching the other cars go by which makes these people go to a dealer and buy one. There are other reasons why a person will prefer to buy one brand over the other. This can be the appearance of the vehicle, the smart engine onboard, or how fast it can accelerate in less than 10 seconds.

With the price of fuel going up, people are more conservative about buying a sports car and one of the main questions that a customer will ask the sales person is how many miles per gallon of fuel does the car consume.

For comparison, 2 cars will be chosen and the figures given will be based on the records of the Department of Energy.

One car that is very well known throughout the world and is one of the best sports cars ever made is the 2003 BMW Z4 Roadster. This car uses premium gas and gets 20 miles per gallon for city driving and 28 miles per gallon on n the highway or an average of 23 miles per gallon.

Another good brand that is known worldwide is Jaguar. Its sports car, the 2004 Jaguar XK8, gets 18 miles per gallon in city driving conditions and 26 miles per gallon on the highway for an average of 21 miles per gallon.

As the figures show, one is able to use less gas in city driving conditions while the other performs better in the highway. The figures above are not definite since the fuel economy varies and is dependent on how the person drives the sports car.

There are many other sports cars in the market that one can compare before choosing the right vehicle to drive off the dealer’s lot. The deciding factor will then depend on a person’s preference.

The sports car is truly an amazing machine that will keep the driver and passenger on the edge of there seats at all times. Though there is not that much difference between these 2 sports cars, the gasoline mileage per gallon is an important factor that people will think about before choosing to buy one sports car over another.

2008 Tesla Roadster: This Electric Sports Car Is the Real Thing

Had we inadvertently forced him off the road on one of our passes while photographing the electric-powered 2008 Tesla Roadster? No. His problem, it turns out, is that the car is “too quiet.” The Tesla, clean and silent but for the hiss of tires on asphalt and the whine of the electric motor’s cooling fan, disturbed him because he didn’t hear it coming as we scooted by him on a twisty section of Skyline Boulevard in the mountains above Tesla’s headquarters in San Carlos, California.

How To Choose The Right Color For Your Sports Car

May 18, 2010 by

If you are buying a new sports car, you may have the opportunity to select its cover from the ever-growing palette provided by auto manufacturers. When selecting a color for your sports car, there are a few factors one should consider.

Individuality may be more of a concern for some than it is for others. If one is seeking an original, or individual look for their sports car, they may be interested in the results of the annual DuPont car color survey. Every year, the survey examines each class of passenger automobiles and finds out which colors are most commonly chosen by consumers.

Based on the results of the DuPont survey, you should avoid a silver paint job if you are trying to stand out in a crowd. Silver has been the most popular color for sports cars each of the last two years and one out of every five sports cars purchased is silver. Those seeking a unique look may also want to think twice about going with red, blue or black color schemes. These three hues were the next most commonly used colors. In comparison, the number of yellow sports cars and green sports cars combined would still only equal approximately half of those sold with a red paint job.

There are few things that are researched as much as consumer habits. Not only are popular colors evaluated by research teams, they have also examined resale values for cars of different colors. Paint schemes that are particularly unique, it appears, are harder to sell used. Of course, this is not surprising. Thus, if you are preoccupied with eventual resale concerns, you might want to pick one of the more popular colors so the sports car will appeal to more prospective buyers.

If you plan on driving the sports car as a primary vehicle or with great regularity, you should consider your environment and usage habits when picking a color. For instance, one who must access a dirt road regularly should probably reconsider a desire for white or similar light hues. Alternatively, a light color might be perfect for someone living in a sunny climate and is more concerned about heat retention and paint fading than with showing a little dust.

When determining which color best suits you and your sports car, there is one factor you should not take into consideration. There is a venerable urban legend that claims car insurance is pegged at higher rates for those driving red cars. Proponents of this myth claim the insurance companies determined those who drove red cars were more prone to accidents and they accordingly increased rates. Today, there is absolutely no evidence to support the “red paint insurance” story. So, don’t let the fear of a higher insurance premium dissuade you from buying a candy apple red sports car if that is your desire.

One should, however, consider the available interior packages when picking out their paint color. Generally, a dealer will recommend a complimentary color scheme, but many of us have seen cars with interior/exterior color combinations that were anything but flattering. Don’t neglect to consider the look of the interior and the exterior together. Will the red paint really compliment the gray interior or neutral brown interior better? Make sure you put together a combination you will enjoy.

One of the great things about buying a new sports car today is the flexibility it affords you. Gone are the days of cookie-cutter cars with few options and limited paint schemes. Today, you can assemble your car to your custom specifications, including the paint job. When picking your color, be thorough in your thinking and you are likely to end up with the perfect sports car.
