Green Energy Savings: Saving You Penny by Penny

Summer. It’s one of the most beautiful times of the year. It’s pretty, bright, and everyone just seems happier when it’s the summer. However, there are a few downsides. One would be sunburn (ouch!) and the other would be your electricity bill. In this heat, it can be deadly to not try and cool down your home. You can do so with fans or air conditioners or a mix of both. You could use the fans, facing in the opposite direction of the air conditioner, to pull the cool air from one room into another to cool down your whole house, if necessary. But the fact of the matter is, staying cool can mean quite a large utility bill. It doesn’t matter if you have a dinky little apartment or a quite sizable house.

However, you can save and be good to the earth too. It’s not nearly as hard as you might think. Here are a few ways that you, average Joe or extraordinary Moe can enjoy green energy savings:

When it comes to green energy savings, the first thing that might come to mind is a tiny little car that can only go thirty four miles per hour. But it isn’t quite like that…

There are also plenty of ways that you can save on your electric bills. One is to unplug all unused appliances in the house and to turn off your A/C and leave your windows open. (If you do this, it is recommended you use a window screen so that you don’t end up with millions of bugs inside your house.) However, there are other options that will lead to less bugs and also to more green energy savings. You won’t even have to turn anything off!

There is a certain type of system that not only reduces your energy usage, but also saves you on your electric bill. Not to mention that the small amount of waste from the system is bio safe and you’re able to dispose of it without affecting the environment.

However, there are a few things that you need to know about these systems.

For one, they work with both single and three phase appliances. This means that pretty much everything from your toaster to your computer to your washer can be more energy efficient. There are two sizes to choose from, both of which are relatively small.

This system also prevents a power surges that can potentially damage your appliances, up to certain amperages. Now, keep in mind that if you have a power surge that exceeds that amperage, you will have some issues. On the other hand, being protected at least partially is better than having ten different surge protectors.

You’re most likely wondering how exactly this system works…well, it’s easy! Pretty much, it saves all of the extra electricity and stores it. Then, instead of having to pull electricity from your company (so to speak), you simply pull it from that little box and voila! The lost electricity is lost no more and neither are your green energy savings!

5 Eco Ideas That Make Real Savings

We are all told about the impact we are having on the environment and we are all encouraged to buy eco-friendly products as greener alternatives, however, many eco ideas cost many and whatever savings they make to the environment impact our wallets too.

However the advantages of living a greener and more natural way, recycling and adopting and eco-friendly lifestyle, should save us money not cost it!

There are many ways we can help the planet and also save money and some of these savings to both our pockets and the environment can be massive, here are five green ideas and eco-friendly products that can really make a difference:

5. Open fires – this may sound contrary to living an eco friendly way but by burning recycled waste you can heat your home without relying on mains gas or electric that comes from power stations. Using log makers that compact recycled material in to tight logs will ensure the waste burns slowly, providing more heat and less smoke. As well as a log maker keeping materials dry in a log store will ensure you get maximum heat and less smoke.

4. Energy saving light bulbs. These use five times less electricity than conventional bulbs and last a lot, lot longer too. Nearly all types of bulb fitting have an energy saving light bulb alternative.

3. Pure wool duvet. Returning to natural materials isn’t just environmentally friendly but natural fibres like wool is far warmer than manmade fabrics. A 100% pure wool duvet will allow you to have the heating off at night saving a tidy sum on your heating bill.

2. Eco clothes airer. Keeping the tumble dryer off saves us on our electricity bills and protects the environment but having clothes lying on radiators looks cluttered and prevents the heat from warming the rooms. Eco clothes airers are ceiling mounted and make use of the heat trapped under the ceiling so the radiators are free to warm the room as the clothes are being dried.

1. Heating and insulation. Perhaps the biggest savings on our bills and the best way to reduce our gas and electric consumptions is to ensure the loft is well insulated and that our heating systems are well maintained and serviced. A faulty boiler or bad insulation will cost you a fortune and the increase in use of power will harm the planet too.

Hybrid Cars and Fuel Savings – Feasible Options

As an engineer I have been studying and following the renewable energy debate and developments for well over 30 years and many useful as well as useless inventions/solutions have crossed my road of discovery.

One tendency, which always seems to stand out, is the all or nothing approach.

All wind power or all nuclear power or all wave, solar etc. and lately all hydrogen, rarely ever a composite/combination of current conventional and renewable energy resources.

The latest fads seem again all nuclear or all hydrogen and the most laughable of them all “Carbon Sequestration”.

CO2 Sequestration, i.e. compressing CO2 and pumping it to the bottom of the oceans or into some geological cavity is as costly in energy consumption as the building, as well as decommissioning of nuclear power stations and the storage of radio active waste and equally hazardous.

Using Bio Fuels, with its current technology, is a bit like incinerating your breakfast, lunch & dinner to drive your car.

Even more fascinating is that all of these latest offerings are not feasible for another 10 to 30 years, requiring huge amounts of funding to prove or disprove their viability. So it seems that invariably concepts are being promoted which have no immediate application when there are ample and proven concepts that can be implemented now with considerable immediate benefits.

Methods such as co-generation (recovery of waste heat) or preheating by renewable resources rarely rate a mention. Both methods are only a few of the many options guaranteeing substantial reductions in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Again, the aspect of the hydrogen as fuel debate is the all or nothing approach. It is nothing new that cars (and planes) can run on hydrogen. The catch here is the, currently, enormous cost of the fuel storage and the non-existing infrastructure. It is even proposed to generate the hydrogen from, would you believe it, carbon based fuels or nuclear power.

One can only wonder why the viable and relatively low cost conversion of existing means of transport is so rarely being considered as an option. For many years now the conversion of petrol powered vehicles to LPG/CNG was feasible, economical and aided the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Hybrid cars, powered by a combination of internal combustion engine, batteries and electric motor can be another, but still very expensive, option to lower fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

So why not use hydrogen in combination with conventional fuel to reduce your fuel consumption and your environmental footprint? It is a proven technology. A low cost on-board hydrogen generator produces small quantities of hydrogen serving as a combustion enhancer. This hydrogen generator only operates while while your petrol/diesel engine is running making it perfectly safe, saves substantial amounts of fuel and does not require any hydrogen storage. In other words no hydrogen is produced when the engine is not running.
