Many businesses these days are interested in sustainable procurement. Sustainable procurement is about taking environmental and social factors into account when making purchasing decisions. It involves thinking about what the products are made of, how they were made, where they come from and who has made them.

The aim of sustainable procurement is to lessen the negative environmental impact of the products we buy.

One way businesses can show their commitment to sustainable procurement is by buying goods made from recycled plastic (when they need the goods anyway). You may be surprised at the range of recycled plastic goods that are available on the market these days and the environmental and economic benefits they can bring.

Attitudes to Recycled Plastic Goods

With organisations under increasing pressure to affirm their commitment to the efficient use of natural resources and waste avoidance, attitudes to purchasing products made from recovered materials are changing.

A recent business survey by a recycled plastic product manufacturer into sustainable procurement and recycled plastics revealed some interesting insights. Almost 90% of those surveyed were managing procurement to some level of sustainable policy or standard, and over 50% admitted recycled plastic played a key role.

Although over 80% considered the market for recycled plastic products a growth area, only 40% currently purchase products made from the material. Over 40% of those that haven’t purchased any recycled plastic products said that if they knew a little more about it, and could be persuaded the quality had improved, they would definitely consider it for any future requirements.

The Benefits of Buying Recycled Plastic Goods

Environmental responsibility – Recycled plastic products are manufactured from plastics that would otherwise have gone to landfill. Labour cost savings – In the long-term your business stands to make significant savings on maintenance, repair and replacement costs as recycled plastic products are so durable. Reduce criminal damageRecycled plastic is more resistant to graffiti and other vandalism than traditional materials. Product longevity – Recycled plastic products are more crack proof, insect resistant, UV tolerant, splinter free, resistant to rot and algae and less flammable than traditional alternatives. Recycled plastic products have a life expectancy at least 4 times that of traditional materials.

Recycled Plastic Goods Available

You may be surprised at the range of recycled plastic goods that are available. Below are just a few examples of the types of products you can buy. If you are thinking of buying a plastic product, look up first whether it is available in recycled plastic form.

Sample recycled plastic products include:

Recycled plastic signs Tables Bollards Benches Fencing Decking

Why not investigate how recycled plastic products could help with your sustainable procurement policy.

Water recycled systems are designed to meet all wash containment issues. Regardless of the size of your particular industry you will be able to manage recycling of water and recover waste water most efficiently and effectively at all times. Water recycle systems produce filtered bacteria free water which is perfectly acceptable to reuse any type of wash.

While taking water as a natural resource, it needs protection. In addition to being protected everyday water can be reused by proper water recycling methods. As a natural resource, scarcity for pure water supply is a common problem through out the entire world. Using the benefits of recycled water for lawns and gardens makes sense for several levels. Really your garden plants and trees does n‘t want purified water. Water recycling is making waves in the commercial arena. It has become obvious in the last generation that we have exploited our planet. We have tapped our natural resources beyond sustainability. We can make changes at home and at work through recycled water. Preserving recycled water has got into become a priority both in home and in workplace.

Some of the examples of industries which are enjoying the benefits of recycled water are Car wash industry, Irrigation and Landscaping, Water to flush the toilet and for other unimportant needs. Rainwater can also be captured and in a slim line water tank to be used for laundry or cleaning as well as for irrigation and to flush toilets after recycling water. Waste water recycling plants plays an important role in production of water for the various needs of a country like Australia, where water scarcity for pure water is much higher compared to others. Recycling of rainwater to reduce main water usage by using more recycled water is simple and easy. If you are building a new property, you will make the property more attractive by including a rainwater harvesting and water recycling system. Log on to: Recycled Water at Queensland.

Due to water recycling system the scarcity with pure water can be reduced to a large extent. The continent of Australia is second only to Antartica in terms of scarcity of water, and irrigation and other water conservation issues have plagued our nation which can be reduced by recycled water. Politicians, environmentalists and farmers have been hashing out recycled water security issues for decades, but increased pressures on our water supply by population growth and potential climate change have tipped the scales to critical mass. It is time for the nation to recognize the drastic effects that the diversion of natural water flows have wreaked on our nations environment and to recognize that unchecked irrigation expansion simply is not a viable option for an environmentally stable Australia. Recycled Content: Pre-Consumer Versus Post-Consumer

November 3, 2010 by

Nowadays it is impossible to turn on your television and not see some sort of advertisement that involves green products. But it is important to be a wise consumer and have a little background knowledge about what makes a product truly green versus “greenwashed.” One of the first basic steps to becoming a well versed green product consumer is to have some knowledge about recycled content, the different types of recycled content (did you know there was more than one?) and what recyclability is in contrast to something having recycled content.

The first type of recycled content is pre-consumer recycled content. This a product that contains the “leftovers” or the waste from a manufacturing process. A good example of this is Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). MDF contains wood particles and sawdust that are then compressed with adhesives and binders to create a very dense material that is used for building. The sawdust and wood particles that make up MDF can be collected from wood mills and slicing plants. Depending on the amount of sawdust that is collected versus created for the MDF determines its recycled content. Pre consumer recycled content is not considered as “golden” as the nest type of recycled content; post-consumer.

Post-consumer recycled materials is any object or material that avoid a landfill after its original purpose of use. Great examples of this type of recycled content are soda cans and milk jugs. Everything you place in your recycle bin at home, such as newspapers, are picked up and delivered to the recycling plant on the first step to become post-consumer recycled content. This type of recycled content is considered “better” because it embodies items that were recycled in lieu of going to the landfill directly.

There are limits to the number of times a product can be recycled and reused. There gets to be a point where a material cannot be used again because it begins to lack in structural integrity. Also, it is really important to keep in mind that just because something contains recycled content does not mean it can be recycled…and just because something can be recycled does not mean it contains recycled content. In an ideal world we would get both – high recycled content and recyclability!

A product example would be a naturally dyed t-shirt rather than a chemically dyed one.

Ethical – This term covers the sourcing and production of promotional products which adheres to commonly appreciated and agreed ethical and moral principles. Conforming to accepted standards of social or professional behavior. This would cover products that are produced in factories that are regulated, clean and safe and with a work force that is of legal age and not under duress.

Sustainable – The raw materials used to make the promotional product has been supplied form a source that has and will be able to continue to supply over a period of time: causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue for a long time. Many paper promotional products are made from tress from specially planted forests that are grown and managed solely for this use.

Biodegradable – The product has the ability to decay naturally and harmlessly without any negative impact on the environment. Biodegradable products and packaging help to limit the amount of harmful chemicals released into the atmosphere. Many plastic promotional carry bags are being produced from biodegradable materials now.

Organic – These organic products are produced without using artificial chemicals in the growing of plants or animals for food and other products. Organic bags and t-shirts are becoming more main stream in the promotional market without having a premium price attached to them.

Fair Trade – Trade conducted under fair-trade agreement. A way of buying and selling products that makes certain that the original producer receives a fair price. This would cover items such as promotional t-shirts where the cotton growers have been paid a fair price for the raw materials.

Canon Make Calculators Out of Recycled Photocopiers

The ‘green’ calculators released by Canon have an upper and lower case made from 100 percent recycled photocopiers. The packaging and instruction manuals are also made from recycled materials.

Many of the calculators in this range are dual powered by battery and solar panel. This dual power helps to reduce energy use and prolong the life of the battery. These calculators also have replaceable batteries, helping to extend their life and minimise waste. The larger calculators in this range are powered by a connection to the mains supply.

The recycled calculator range was launched by Canon in January 2008. Two new recycled calculators have recently been added to this range; the LS-120TSG and the F502G. These two new additions have similar features to the rest of the recycled calculator range such as front and back covers made from 100 percent recycled photocopier material and dual power (solar and battery). The F502G has the added benefit of including a protective hard and durable cover that is also made from recycled photocopiers. Both these calculators also feature replaceable batteries and auto-power off, helping to lengthen their life and minimise waste. The LS-120TSG has been designed specifically for corporations as it can perform complex business calculations. The F502G is a scientific calculator, aimed at students and teachers.

Canon photocopiers, printers and multifunctional devices are made from tough and durable materials. By making calculators out of materials sourced from recycled Canon photocopiers, quality, durability and sustainability are assured. One photocopier could contain enough plastic to make up to 259 LS-63TG calculators. The only parts of these calculators made of new plastic are the acrylic display covers and the keys. By making these new calculators from recycled photocopiers, the amount of new plastic being manufactured can be reduced and the durable and high quality materials used to make photocopiers can be put to good use when the photocopier reaches the end of its life.

Environmental issues are something that Canon takes very seriously (Canon UK were voted in the top 50 Sunday Times best green companies: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/related_reports/best_green_companies/tables/). They strive to continue to find new ways to make their office equipment as environmentally friendly as possible. The green calculator range is part of an ongoing environmental initiative from Canon. They aim to not only reduce their own environmental impact in the manufacturing of their products, but also to help other businesses to lessen their environmental impact. Canon also strive to make their products 75 percent recyclable by mass (for re-use and material recycling) and 85 percent recoverable by mass (including thermal recycling). The majority of Canon products comply with ENERGY STAR requirements, which is an international standard for energy efficient consumer products and they have been awarded ENERGY STAR partner of the year several times. Canon’s photocopiers, printers and multifunctional devices are designed to stay well below regulatory limits and indoor quality guidelines under normal conditions for chemical emission levels. With dedication and commitment Canon will continue to try and find ways create environmentally friendly products, helping to give businesses peace of mind when purchasing their office equipment.
