Hybrid cars are given rave reviews for their fuel efficiency, eco-friendliness, and the savings that they can bring over time to their owners. There are people who switched their luxury cars for these go-green vehicles to do their part in helping the environment. Yet there are still some who shrug and are non-committal if asked if they have plans of trading in their economy cars for a hybrid anytime soon.

1. Experts at Consumer Reports have advised against buying hybrids if you’re the type who’s looking into immediate gains and savings. The rave reviews might praise the hybrids but these cars on the market can set your budget back with the high price tag, despite the hybrid tax incentives offered by the government. Consumer Reports have compared two 2003 models, the 36-mile per gallon Honda Civic Hybrid and the 29-mile per gallon Honda Civic EX. Side by side, the former sells for around ,000 and the latter is ,500.

2. Wait until car companies bring in better hybrid in the next year or two. There’s a very high possibility that hybrid cars manufactured early are vulnerable to depreciation. This is because car manufacturers are upgrading powertrains, improving handling, and milage of these hybrids as we speak. The premium is too high for just a slight difference in mileage from economy cars. There’s still some hesitation on other consumers too, as it would take too long a time for their hybrid investment to see some pay back, not just for the price tag but for getting insurance for it, too.

3. Spending money on a hybrid right now will crunch your finances tight, even when you’re using a gas guzzler SUV. If you’re desperately looking for ways to trade in your SUV, you’re better off with a compact economy car rather than buying a hybrid car. It’s not very feasible if you’re in it to save money, though it remains as an awesome pro-eco statement.

There are those that propagate ditching all cars except hybrid types, but there are those who still are unsure about how hybrid owners can recoup and save with their hybrid purchase. One thing is for sure that hybrids of today have a long way to go from shifting to “transition technology”. There are still many ways we can contribute without shelling out thousands of dollars for a car. If you really want to save until a better hybrid car comes along, do the environment a favor and utilize bicycle, public transport, walking, and at the very least car pooling to be able to make a difference!

One of the biggest problems the growing green movement faces can be found hidden in every baby’s diaper. Eco friendly diapers are in short supply unlike that which they were intended to collect. There currently aren’t enough landfills to deal with all the diapers out there.

Babies go through about 5,000 diapers during potty training and the EPA says that diapers account for 3.4 million tons of waste (roughly 2% for the US total) in landfills (1998 figures). To qualify as eco friendly diapers it will be necessary to bypass the landfills as well as the harmful chemicals.

It may at first seem an easy, green choice to go with cloth diapers rather than disposable, but the diaper solution is not so cut and dried. To make cloth your eco friendly diaper of choice you will need a few basic items.

First and foremost you will need a washer and dryer at your beck and call and the time to constantly wash the tainted offerings that your baby produces at a near prolific rate. You will need to chose an eco friendly laundry soap and the style of cloth diaper that best suits your child.

This is by far the most preferable way to deal with the diaper issue, but not the solution for everyone. City dwellers may look to a diaper service, but eco friendly diapers do not come from most pay services. Due to excessive hot water use and necessity of chlorine bleach (to kill Staff and other infections common to babies), these services produce less than eco friendly results.

This takes us back to disposable diapers. Conventional disposables (Pampers, Huggies) are also not eco friendly diapers. Their manufacture involves chlorine (a volital organic compound VOC) and all use chemical gel cores that “lock in” a baby’s pee. These chemical gels contain sodium polyacrylate known for respiratory and skin irritation problems (mind you in much higher doses than found in diapers).

These manufacturers would argue that the chemicals used are all within safe limits, but do you really want to swaddle your child in such potential problems? Disposable, eco friendly diapers do exist, sort of and are are making strides towards even higher standards of green on a daily basis.

A well know manufacturer of many green products, Seventh Generation, makes a disposable eco friendly diaper or so they say. The truth is a truly biodegradable diaper doesn’t really exist due to the quantity versus the available landfills.

But Seventh Generation is a very transparent company as far as their ingredients go and produces some of the best eco friendly products available. They also claim that their eco friendly diapers use a “chemically inert” gel and claim independent scientific research has shown it is “nontoxic, not carcinogenic, and nonirritating to the skin.”

Another company, Gdiapers, makes a similar product with the added advantage of making their diapers flushable. The flushable feature does eliminate the landfill problem (some statistics put a diapers landfill life around 500 years), but both of these so called eco friendly diapers use similar gel cores on which there is still not enough definitive research.

The winner, in this reviewers eyes, in the disposable eco friendly diaper contest is made by Tushies. Assembled in the US, these are made of a cotton blend, chlorine free wood pulp and best of all, no chemical gels. Not as widely available as the Seventh Generation product, this brand can be found in some health food stores and also online.

The final word on diapers is that “eco friendly diapers” is an still an oxymoron at this point. Diaper services show facts that gel absorbents in disposables are harmful and disposables claim the chlorine used in diaper services is harmful. There is no definitive proof of either side being right. The eco friendly diapers of the future will combine all the best features, flushability, no gel absorbents above all comfort and safety for your baby.

Ever since the Waste Strategy Unit’s last report, “Waste not, want not” was made public on twenty-seven Nov 2002, the United Kingdom has been accelerating recycling rates and pushing at really serious targets which will significantly cut back the tonnages of waste to dump. Landfills which were filling at an ever increasing rate were threatening to cover the land and rise above it, finally filling every quarry and patch of waste land in our built up areas and then devouring huge acreages of farmland as well.

Over the same period public willingness to recycle in their homes has risen inspired by separate waste collections which have progressively been introduced by local authorities and which have extended the quantity and range of source separated and comingled Municipal Solid Waste diverted away from landfill.

For some time costs of engineered landfills have been rising and rules have been getting tighter.

In the background, the Environment Agency has in addition been raising the green regulation standards obligatory to of the landfill operators which has at the same time raised their expenditure which have been transferred never-endingly to the landfill users.

Over the identical period community enthusiasm to recycle in their homes has also risen encouraged by separate waste collections which have progressively been introduced in local authorities as well as which have expanded the number and breadth of source separated and co-mingled Municipal Solid Waste diverted away from landfill.

At some point it was all about to make both environmental AND commercial sense to recycle, but many worried whether the industry ever quite get there before the political will to do so was lost.

That all this was eventually adding up to profitable cost competitive recycling is being confirmed by the number 1 waste recycling corporations in the commercial and economic waste sector.

All this adds up to a family run business like Bywaters, with its friendly and eager workers at plants like the Recycling and Recovery Facility at Bow, and for so long devoted to sustainable business, to now also reap the industrial benefits they deserve for themselves and their clients.

As I found in a recent trip to the Bywaters Bow Recycling Plant, staff work extremely closely with the waste producing companies from which they accept their waste, such that quite soon after even the least “environmentally aware” organisations come aboard, they are able to up their game and massively improve the purity of their client’s source segregation systems within just a few short months

This is a win-win situation because not only is the residual waste quantity reduced for the customer, but the value of the purer recycled (source segregated) material reduces the processing cost at the Bywaters’ faciility.

These recycling corporations are now well placed to resume to raise recycling rates as a percentage of total waste produced, gratifying public demand, and to work in partnership with their clients to further invest in making improvements to the potency of the their recycling processes. These enhancements also helped by their clients will continue to push down costs, and are already providing higher quality recycled raw materials, of a consistency, quantity, and quality which could never have been imagined just seven years ago when “Waste not, want not” was published.

The future will see reliable and “main stream” bulk availability of quality controlled recycled products.

The positive feedback which will result will further stabilize and raise the markets in recycled commodities and the volatility in these markets will in turn moderate to become unremarkable.

So, for any companies that are still not recycling their waste we say:

“Be “green” and recycle – it just makes sense like never before.”.

I think we have all seen the ads promoting hydrogen fuel cell conversion kits, which is basically converting water to fuel. The question is does it really work and is it a viable solution for saving money on gas? Here is the premise of the idea. Basically what happens is you can either buy or make a conversion kit which uses your engine to process the water into hydrogen fuel. This fuel can then be used in conjunction with regular fuel to power your engine. I have seen many different products on the market that claim to achieve this process and I have found that yes, the process does work if done correctly.

We are all naturally skeptical but my research shows that there is scientific proof that it can work, not to mention the growing number of people who actually use the water conversion system. Since this is a proven method and it saves people money you can bet that there are many products on the market that will help you achieve this goal. Most programs that I’ve researched are very similar and achieve the same end result, so why are they priced so differently? Greed. Some of these products have fancier ads and look prettier than others of the same product, but in the end they offer the same thing. If you were to try the system and order the DIY kit and use the process then I would suggest that you save money and get it as cheap as possible, saving money is your goal now isn’t it? This is one of those cases that you get what you pay for doesn’t necessarily apply since the kits I looked at were basically the same product.

Theoretically, by converting water to fuel you save money, increase your vehicle performance and cut down on pollution…less fuel consumption = less pollution. It seems that gas price is just one less thing we need to worry about with the real estate crash, rising food prices and struggling to pay the month to month bills. So yes, I’m totally for hydrogen fuel and I would recommend trying one of these products. I have seen that it works and the process also appears to be reversible in case you decide you don’t want it anymore or just don’t like it.

When I tested a product I chose the bare bones kit and it was relatively cheap and so far so good. The only other product I considered was more expensive but it included plenty of literature on saving money, how things work etc. Since I did all the research prior I didn’t need the extra literature but I can see why some consumers would want that. Lastly, make sure that there are guarantees in place with the product. I don’t buy anything unless I can get my money back if I’m unsatisfied and you shouldn’t either.
