Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – What Makes A Printer Environmentally Friendly?
The “Green era” is upon us, after hundreds of years destroying the planet, human kind has finally decided to take care of Earth. Governments across the globe are at last trying to set up schemes so industries will reduce their CO2 emissions, one of the major players in the global warming game.
One industry that has been investing big to work under the “eco friendly” label is the Printing industry. Over the years Printers have upgraded their printing facilities to reduce carbon footprint as well as reduce environmental impact by working with biodegradable inks and recycled papers.
But like in other industries, there are many Printers saying that have the rights to work under the “green printing label” when they don’t. This brings us to the sole purpose of this article. What makes a printer environmentally friendly?
To be considered an environmentally friendly Printer first and foremost, the Printer must earn a series of green credentials like the ISO 14001 Certificate.
The ISO 14001 is an international standard that specifies the actual requirements for an EMS (Environmental Management System). The ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standards exist to help organisations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment and cause adverse changes to air, water, or land. They comply with applicable laws, regulations and other environmentally oriented requirements and continually improve on the above.
This certificate is not an easy one to obtain it requires planning and investments of time and money that is why it is one of the most respected green credentials there is.
Another well respected credential is the one from the FSC – Forest Stewardship Council – a certification system that provides internationally recognized standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organisations, and communities interested in responsible forestry.
The FSC certification is very similar to the PEFC – the world’s largest forest certification system. The PEFC works throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to its eco-label, customers and consumers are able to identify products from sustainably managed forests.
Other green credentials will vary from country to country. There is a hand full of local green credentials a Printer could earn to reinforce their environmental concern and really earn that “Green Printing Label”.
Type of Paper used
Many Printers are opting for recycled paper but quality might not be as good as normal paper. By earning the FSC & PEFC certifications a Printer assures the paper that is being used comes from sustainable managed forests.
Reducing Carbon Footprint
There are many ways to reduce a printing facility carbon footprint. Reducing energy consumption is the major player here and my suggestion is to hire an energy consultancy firm to do a Carbon Trust Survey, which will indentify areas, where energy could be saved reducing the Mill’s carbon footprint.
If a Printer complies with all those items mentioned above it sure has the rights to work under the “Green Printing Label”.

Why Recycle Printer Cartridges?
August 19, 2010 by admin
Want to help and save the earth? Why not recycle printer cartridges? You can do this by purchasing recycled printer cartridges at a variety of different outlets, including those online. By choosing to recycle printer cartridges you will get the same quality cartridge as you normally get with your printer, and the same quality ink but you do not have to continue to litter landfills with the empty plastic cartridges.
In order to recycle printer cartridges and get the best deal, follow these tips:
Know your product number
Make sure that you know the number of your printer or the type of cartridges that your printer takes. You still have to use the same cartridge, but the ink will be refilled. If you are not sure about the type of printer that you have, take a look on the back and look at the number that is listed on your printer. You can also look at the cartridge and see if there is a number. This will help you figure out which type of recycled printer cartridge that you need.
Get the cartridges for your printer
Beware of places that offer to sell you generic printer cartridges. Many of these will not work with your printer and you end up throwing your money away. You can save money when you choose to recycle printer cartridges by getting the authentic cartridges that have been recycled. This way, they are sure to work.
Shop online for the best price
You will be shocked at the prices when you recycle printer cartridges. Not only are you doing your best for the environment, but you are also saving yourself quite a bit of money. If you are used to spending over $50 for one brand new cartridge, you will be pleased to see that you will only pay a fraction of that cost when you choose to recycle printer cartridges.
When you recycle printer cartridges, you are doing the wise thing for both the environment as well as yourself. There is no reason to throw away the entire plastic casing every time your printer cartridge runs out of ink. By choosing to recycle printer cartridges, you will save money and also be doing the right thing for the environment.

Choosing a Green Printer
June 11, 2010 by admin
Green printing has been getting a lot of attention recently. As awareness about the environmental impact of printing increases, more people are seeking green printing options that use recycled paper and soy & vegetable-based inks. However, it is important to realize that green printing goes beyond just paper and inks. Many green printers are now looking at their operations more holistically and working to implement comprehensive, environmentally responsible practices.
As you search for a green printer, here are a few things to questions to consider. Your printer should be able to provide you with this information so that you can make the most informed choice for your printing needs.
Recycled paper: How much recycled paper do they carry? Is it a “special request” item? Does it contain at least 50% post-consumer waste? Recycled papers can range from low recycled content to 100% recycled with 100% post-consumer waste. Soy/vegetable inks: What are the levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)? Does the ink contain petroleum? Many commercial printing inks are now available that contain only trace levels of VOCs of less than 1 gram/liter. Carbon offsets: Do they offset their emissions from operations and shipping? All businesses are emitting carbon right now, so after implementing initiatives for energy efficiency, offsetting what remains provides investments in clean energy options for the future. Equipment: What type of equipment are they using? Newer equipment helps to reduce some of the waste inherent in the printing process. Supply chain: Has the company looked at its supply chain? What types of suppliers does the company support? Working with suppliers is one of the ways that more environmentally responsible practices can encouraged. Third-party audit and verification: Can their environmental claims be independently verified by third-party auditors? This is an important point to consider. Some reputable certifications to consider are the Forest Stewardship Council, B Corporation, and the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (the printing industry’s own standards for green printing).
Greenerprinter is a certified green business that prints business cards, marketing collateral, product catalogs, and more using only recycled paper and soy & vegetable-based inks. With an easy-to-use online ordering system and more than 20 years of experience, Greenerprinter offers a high-quality, responsible printing alternative.
