More money is spent annually on home renovation than on new construction, (almost $300 billion in 2006). It is estimated that more than a million homes per year undergo major renovation or remodeling.
Economic and environmental realities are driving homeowners to look at how to maximize resource usage and to decrease the waste stream generated by construction projects. More of us are asking if there are better ways to remodel that can enhance health, reduce energy consumption, lower maintenance costs and minimize environmental impact. There is. It’s called green remodeling.
What is green remodeling? Essentially, it is the convergence of three basic principles:
• Increasing energy efficiency
• Improving indoor air quality
• Conserving natural resources
Perhaps the best way to describe the philosophy of green remodeling is that it is a form of applied common sense. Remodeling and renovation projects offer myriad ways to reduce, re-use and recycle. Salvaging and re-using materials can result in lower cost of materials and in the reduction of environmentally damaging waste disposal and lowering disposal-related fees. As a bonus, the use of salvaged materials, such as wood flooring, doors and antique fixtures can also add beauty and style to a newly remodeled space.
In their book, “Green Remodeling”, co-authors David Johnston and Kim Master refer to green remodeling as “Changing the World, One Room at a Time” (available at http://www.amazon.com), According to the authors, you can do this by employing green building processes and materials in remodeling projects, because going green “is more energy-efficient, more resource-conserving, healthier for occupants and more affordable to create, operate and maintain”.
Many products and practices used in remodeling a home can have negative effects on the environment. Green remodeling requires that thoughtful attention is given to minimizing or eliminating products or practices that could cause environmental damage or that could harm occupants during construction, or after the remodeling project is complete.
Since 1993, The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) http://www.usgbc.org/ has developed and administered a Green Building Rating System. USGBC provides practical information on applying green building standards to building projects. The adoption of green practices is seen as a way homeowners can meaningfully contribute to efforts aimed toward reducing global warming. There are many green alternatives to standard practices that USGBC recommends:
• Use wood alternatives like engineered lumber, or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood harvested from managed forests (http://www.fscus.org)
• Employ renewable products like bamboo for flooring
• Reduce the use of paint and cleaning products containing high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s)
• Use natural fiber rugs and fabrics
• When available, use recycled or high recycled-content materials
• Plant trees to provide shade and wind protection, saving money on heating and cooling costs
• Green up your yard using native plants that are adapted to local soil and weather conditions, thereby lowering maintenance and reducing the use of chemical pesticides, fertilizer and irrigation
• Shop locally. When practical, use locally produced products to reduce carbon emissions caused by long distance transportation
When planning a remodeling project, bear in mind that it is both easier and cheaper to incorporate green materials and strategies in the early stages, rather than adding them piecemeal, or as an afterthought, when in the thick of the project.
Here are some green remodeling strategies to consider.
Energy Conservation
Ways to increase energy efficiency can range from simply adding an insulation blanket to your water heater and insulating hot water pipes to replacing older appliances with new Energy Star-rated appliances. Replacing a standard storage water heater with a so-called tankless water heating system can result in increased efficiency and significant monthly utility savings. Additional savings can be achieved by simply switching from incandescent to fluorescent lighting, which reduces energy consumption for lighting by up to 75 percent. Thanks to the Energy Policy Act of 2005, homeowners who choose green alternatives when updating their homes could be eligible for tax credits to offset some remodeling costs. If your remodeling project includes new exterior siding, consider having a professional evaluate the insulation in your exterior wall cavities and the energy efficiency of your doors and windows. If deficiencies are found, insulation materials such as cellulose, rock wool and some forms of foam can be installed from outside, without damaging interior wall surfaces. Adding a house wrap under new siding will markedly reduce air infiltration and exfiltration, saving on both heating and cooling costs. Tests commonly performed when evaluating the thermal efficiencies of your home can diagnose the ability of your wall, window and door systems to prevent heat loss and air infiltration. A primary technique to evaluate energy efficiency involves the use of ‘blower doors’ to test air inflow and outflow. http://www.homeenergy.org.
Replacing old single pane windows with insulated glass can save up to 25 percent on heating and cooling costs. The highest level of savings can be achieved by using so-called low-e glazing (for low emittance). Low-e coatings are microscopically thin, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on window or skylight glass primarily to reduce radiative heat flow. Low-e glass units are available that promote high, moderate or low solar gain, depending on your climate.
Indoor Air Quality
When an older home is tightened up to promote greater energy efficiency, it’s imperative to assure that adequate ventilation is available in order to assure healthy indoor air and to prevent interior moisture build-up.
Current research indicates that our indoor air is often more polluted than outside air. This increased concern is prompted by the realization that most people spend 80-90 percent of their time indoors.
There are many sources that can negatively impact indoor air quality. These include pollutants from the outdoor environment, and the toxic chemicals used inside the home from a variety of sources. Indoor air is often further degraded by other pollutants introduced by occupants, such as tobacco smoke, smoke or particulates emitted by home appliances that burn wood, coal, kerosene, and propane (or natural gas). Other significant sources of toxicity come from sealants, cleaning products, paint, asbestos, damp carpets or fabrics, and certain pressed-wood cabinet and furniture products that release chemicals into the air. In some areas, radon (a naturally-emitted subterranean radioactive gas found in some regions) can cause serious health problems. http://www.dspinspections.com

Green remodeling seeks to remedy these problems with a combination of air filtration, ventilation systems and choosing to use the least toxic product options. Reduced Material Waste and Resource Conservation
As a rule, remodeling is more eco-friendly than new construction, since fewer materials and resources are consumed to remodel an old house than to build a new structure. Since 30 percent of materials disposed of at landfills typically consist of construction debris, there is a lot of room for improvement in home improvement.
Even though remodeling generally uses fewer materials than new construction, it can generate a significant waste stream. This results in 136 million tons of waste annually. Planning how salvaged materials can be used or recycled can lessen the costs and the impact of construction debris disposal. Good planning can pay off. If you choose not to re-use your old claw foot tub, you may find a local buyer that will be very happy to take it off your hands. The same is true about sinks, cabinets, lighting fixtures, doors, etc.
When it’s possible, using local materials, building with engineered lumber, and hiring recycling companies to remove waste all help to maximize resource use when remodeling.
Perhaps most important of all when you are considering a remodeling project, get back to the basics. Consider the advice of Sara Gutterman, co-founder of Green Builder magazine http://www.greenbuildermagazine.com:
“In order to accomplish the most desirable sustainable outcome, it is important to begin the process of remodeling with the end result in mind. Understanding the personal impetus behind your desire to remodel is paramount so that you can optimize your new design. Think about how you live in your home. Consider which spaces you use and which ones sit dark and lonely for most of the year, waiting those few special evenings when partygoers enter and infuse them momentarily with life. Many modern designs do not actually fit the needs of the typical homeowner. They often contain formal living spaces that remain unused because of their size and lack of intimacy. When we can understand that interior space is a precious resource just like clean water, air, and soil, we can begin to think more sustainably about it.”

The Chevrolet Tahoe is a full size sports utility vehicle which has been sold and produced by General Motors since 1992. Since it is a full size SUV, the Tahoe does not get very good fuel efficiency. However, the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe does come with various engine options which have an effect on the overall fuel efficiency.

The base engine option for the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe is a 5.3 liter eight cylinder engine which is combined with a six speed automatic transmission. This engine option comes with decent horsepower and torque and fuel efficiency is above average when compared to other full size SUVs. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the Tahoe with the 5.3 liter engine gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 15 miles per gallon on the highway. The Tahoe comes standard with two wheel drive, however if it is upgraded to four wheel drive fuel efficiency remains the same. To help save money on gasoline, the 5.3 liter engine will accept either normal gasoline or the cheaper E85 fuel.

For those drivers looking for more fuel efficiency, the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe can come with a hybrid engine. The hybrid engine is actually larger than the traditional engine and is a six liter eight cylinder engine.  Fuel efficiency for the hybrid Tahoe is quite impressive as the EPA estimates that it will get 21 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway. When upgrading the hybrid Tahoe to four wheel drive, fuel efficiency remains the same.Â

The Mazda 3 is a compact sedan produced and sold by the Japan based Mazda Motor Corporation. The Mazda 3 was first introduced with the 2004 model year, when it replaced Mazda Familia as Mazda Corporation’s main compact sedan. The 2010 Mazda 3 is the first car in the second generation of the Mazda 3. There were numerous changes in options from the first to second generation, one of which was a new engine option.
The 2010 Mazda 3 comes with two engine options. The first engine option, which comes standard in the Mazda 3, is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine which produces only 148 horsepower and 135 pound feet of torque. Like most compact sedans, the 2010 Mazda 3 with the 2.0-liter engine gets good fuel efficiency. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the 2010 Mazda 3 with the 2.0-liter engine gets 22 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
For those looking for slightly more engine performance, the Mazda 3 can be upgraded to a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine which produces 167 horsepower and 168 pound feet of torque. The 2.5-liter engine is new to the 2010 Mazda 3 and EPA estimates were not readily available. The 2.5-liter engine replaced a 2.3-liter engine, which was optional on the 2009 Mazda 3. The 2.3-liter engine received an EPA estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway.
Future models of the Mazda 3 are expected to retain the same engine options as the 2010 Mazda 3.
Both the 2.0-liter engine and the 2.5-literr engine can come with either a six-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed automatic transmission is new to the 2010 Mazda 3. Regardless of which engine is selected, the Mazda 3 will come with front wheel drive.

The Infiniti and the Engine Options

The Infiniti M is a luxurious sedan which has been produced and sold by the Nissan corporation since 2003. In the early 1990s, the Infiniti M was sold a two door coupe, but was only sold for a few years before being discontinued.
The Infiniti M comes with two engine options. The first option is the 2010 Infiniti M35 which comes with a 3.5 liter six cylinder engine. The V6 within the M35 produces an impressive 303 horsepower. The only transmission option available for the Infiniti M35 is a five speed automatic transmission which comes with a manual shift mode.
The second engine option for the Infiniti M is a 4.5 liter eight cylinder engine. The 2010 Infiniti M45, which comes standard with the V8 engine, gets only slightly better horsepower than the V6. The M45′s horsepower is 325. Like the M35 the 2010 Infiniti M45 comes standard with the five speed automatic transmission that has a manual shift mode.
Like most powerful luxury sedans, fuel efficiency is a concern. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the M35 gets 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. The more powerful M45 get an estimated 16 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway.
The 2010 Infiniti M45 and M35 have similar engine options that the Infiniti M had in previous years. The 2010 model is the last model of the current Infiniti M generation. Starting with the 2011 Infiniti M, the third generation will be unveiled. The third generation Infiniti M is expected to have a more powerful engine which will get even more horsepower. Current plans include introducing a hybrid engine which will drastically improve the car’s fuel efficiency.

GMC has given the Canyon two engine choices for 2010, a 2.9L 4 cylinder or a 3.7L 5 cylinder. The 4 cylinder is the Canyon’s base engine, and it produces a maximum of one hundred eighty-five horsepower. The 5 cylinder is the optional engine, and it produces a maximum of two hundred forty-two horsepower. The Canyon’s bed is six feet long, and has a payload capacity of one thousand four hundred forty-one pounds when equipped with either the four cylinder or five cylinder engine. The truck bed volume is forty-four cubic feet.
The four cylinder powerplant is a dual overhead cam unit which comes standard with a five speed manual transmission; a four speed automatic transmission is optional. The optional 5 cylinder unit also features a dual overhead cam valve train, and both the base and optional engines incorporate multi-point fuel injection in their designs. The Canyon can be ordered with either two wheel or four wheel drive. Fuel economy for the four cylinder is eighteen miles per gallon in city driving and twenty-four miles per gallon in highway driving; the optional 5 cylinder powerplant returns fuel economy figures of seventeen miles per gallon in the city and twenty-three miles per gallon on the highway. The GMC Canyon comes with a long list of standard features; air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and stability control are all standard features on the Canyon. The Canyon received four star crash ratings in U.S. Government testing for front passenger and front driver collisions.GMC has given the Canyon two engine choices for 2010, a 2.9L 4 cylinder or a 3.7L 5 cylinder.

Ford gives the 2010 Explorer Sport Trac 2 Engine Options

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a four door truck based on the Ford Explorer SUV platform. The Explorer Sport Trac is available with two engine options: a base 4.0L V6 and an optional 4.6L V8. The 4.0L V6 powerplant is a single overhead cam unit that utilizes a sequential fuel induction system and two valves per cylinder. The only transmission option is a five speed automatic transmission that sends the powerplant’s power throught the rear wheels. Horsepower output is rated by Ford at two hundred ten at five thousand one hundred revolutions per minute; torque figures are given by Ford as two hundred fifty-four pound feet at three thousand seven hundred revolutions per minute. Payload capacity of this vehicle is rated at one thousand three hundred ninety pounds, and towing capacity is given by Ford as seven thousand one hundred sixty pounds. Fuel economy figures are rated at fourteen miles per gallon in city driving, and twenty miles per gallon on the highway.
Plumping for the V8 increases the horsepower output to two hundred ninety-two, and decreases the fuel economy ratings to thirteen miles per gallon in city driving and nineteen miles per gallon in highway driving. The list of standard equipment includes air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, illuminated keyless remote control, a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, and intermittent wipers. The U.S. government has awarded the Explorer Sport Trac five star ratings in driver front, passenger front, front side, and rear side crash testing. Standard safety features on the Explorer Sport Trac are traction control, child door locks, and an engine immobilizer.

Dodge Gives the Popular Dodge Ram 1500 3 Engine Options

The Dodge Ram 1500 is Chrysler’s best-selling vehicle in the United States. The Dodge Ram 1500 is available with three engine options; a 3.7L V6, a 4.7L V8, and a 5.7L V8. The base 3.7L engine is a single overhead cam unit with sequential port injection. The manufacturer rates the power output on the 3.7L engine at two hundred fifteen horsepower at five thousand two hundred revolutions per minute, and torque output is rated at two hundred thirty-five horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute. The power output for the 4.7L engine is stated by the manufacturer at three hundred ten horsepower, and the manufacturer’s rating for the 5.7L V8 is three hundred ninety horsepower.
The only transmission available is a four speed automatic transmission that sends the engine’s power through the rear wheels of the truck. The payload capacity of this truck is one thousand four hundred eighty pounds, and the truck’s maximum towing capacity in nine thousand one hundred pounds when properly outfitted. The Environmental Protection Agency has rated the 3.7L engine at fourteen miles per gallon in normal city driving, and twenty miles per gallon in highway driving. The truck bed length is 6.3 feet, and the truck bed volume is 58 cubic feet. Standard equipment on the Ram 1500 include air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, a tilt steering wheel, and an AM/FM stereo with a compact disc player. Safety equipment standard on the Ram 1500 include driver, passenger, and side airbags, along with an engine immobilizer. The Ram 1500 has received five star crash ratings in government testing for both passenger front and driver front crash testing. The payload capacity of this truck is one thousand four hundred eighty pounds, and the truck’s maximum towing capacity in nine thousand one hundred pounds when properly outfitted. The Environmental Protection Agency has rated the 3.7L engine at fourteen miles per gallon in normal city driving, and twenty miles per gallon in highway driving.

The Engine Options for the 2010 Dodge Avenger

The Dodge Avenger is a front wheel drive, midsize sedan which has been produced by Chrysler since 1995. Prior to 2008, the Avenger came as two-door coupe.
The 2010 Dodge Avenger comes standard with a 2.4 liter, four cylinder engine which produces 173 horsepower, which is typical for an affordable midsize sedan. The common complaint of average horsepower is slightly offset by the above average fuel efficiency, which comes with the 2.4 liter engine. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates the 2010 Dodge Avenger with the 2.4 liter engine gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
For slightly more money, Dodge Avenger drivers can upgrade to a 2.7 liter, six cylinder engine. Most Avenger purchasers do not consider this purchase worthwhile as the horsepower is only slightly improved up to 186. The 2.7 liter V6 is one of the smallest six cylinder engines available in cars today.
For those who are looking for a more powerful engine, the 2010 Dodge Avenger can be upgraded to the R/T trim, which comes with a 3.5 liter six cylinder engine. The 3.5 liter V6 generates some very impressive power as it gets up to 235 horsepower, which is typical for an affordable midsize sedan. While the power increases dramatically with the 3.5 liter engine, the fuel Avenger’s fuel efficiency takes a slight hit. The 3.5 liter V6 gets an EPA estimated 16 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. The 3.5 liter is only available in the R/T trim, and is not an upgrade option for the other trims.
The engine options within the 2010 Avenger are similar to the 2008 and 2009 options. Models produced prior to 2008, which came as coupes, had different engine options.
