Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Defining Green Jobs
We have all heard about Green careers. We know that green collar jobs have purposes on many fronts from the environment to the economy to the ego. On one hand, green collar jobs clean up the environment simply because of their thrust in making the world a greener place to live in. On the other, green collar jobs are expected to grow in the coming years with increased environmental awareness and increased federal funding.
All of these sound great in theory, of course. After all, there is no better job than one that can serve the ends of the economy, the environment and the ego. The problem lies in the definition of green jobs, which continues to evolve with legislation, technology and common usage. The definition can often range from the very narrow to the very inclusive, which muddies up the issue some more.
So, what exactly constitutes green collar jobs? Well, there are only three criteria as agreed upon by industry insiders, which this article will try to break down.
Impact on Environmental Protection
Green collar jobs must either have direct or indirect impact on the well-being of the planet. Thus, when employers make the job descriptions, certain goals must be met in the process. It must be emphasized that the following goals need not be met in all instances just as long as the impact is one of protection of the environment.
Thus, green jobs achieve several of the following green goals:
* It contributes to the generation and use of renewable energy.
* It serves to lessen the levels of greenhouse gas emissions, pollutants and toxic materials.
* It conserves natural resources such as water, land and energy.
* It minimizes waste, be it in terms of recycling, reducing and reusing.
* It decreases the use of dangerous materials either in the input or output sense.
* It promotes biodiversity and the restoration of damaged ecosystems.
* It minimizes humanity’s negative impact on the planet.
Impact on the Economy
Green collar jobs also exert an impact on the lagging economy. Keep in mind that the Obama administration sees green jobs as one of the most effective ways to keep the economic recovery on track mainly through the so-called green stimulus plan, of which the tax incentives on the manufacturers of solar and wind systems is the latest of the bunch.
Proponents of the plan assert that at least 3.3 million jobs will be created by said tax breaks. When you consider that the unemployment rate is now hovering at the painful 10 percent mark, this is welcome news indeed.
Impact on the Ego
We are, of course, talking about the personal ego. Green careers can go a long way towards a happier workforce in many ways. For one thing, unemployed workers will now have more job prospects. Workers will also know that while they are filling up their pockets, they also own up to the responsibility of environmental protection. Many people will say that, indeed, green collar jobs are a win-win situation for all of humanity.
Green jobs are in high demand nowadays. One will do well to take the opportunities in the field for the sake of their own pockets, the economy and the environment. Think of it as hitting three birds with one stone (No offense to the bird-lovers reading this article)

Is US Shipping Green Jobs Overseas?
November 3, 2010 by admin
Is the US shipping green jobs overseas? We took a quick look at the destruction of a recently expanded manufacturing plant that created solar panels. The plant had been working steadily in Maryland for 30 years and recently had to shut its doors. The question is why? With the new initiatives and calling for Green Energy by the Obama administration you would think that these kinds of established jobs should have multiplied rather than be eliminated. Needless to say Federal and local regulations in Frederick Maryland helped cause a negative business climate in which BP sent their jobs elsewhere. Looking at how much it costs in terms of government subsidies to create these jobs, the United States is following the example of Spain, in which for every green job created, another 2 jobs are lost in separate fields due to taxation. If the Administration was serious about green jobs then they should allow the free market to help allocate resources rather than creating a glut of solar products which lowers prices and kills jobs. Shot on location in Frederick Maryland Update: This was shot and edited well before the Oil spill in the gulf, so stop emailing us about energy theories please. We appreciate the enthusiasm but these two situations are unrelated.
Be Green Jobs Ready

There are hundreds of types of green jobs that are available. People get far too caught up on just one or two types such as alternative energy, and forget or overlook all the other green careers that are available to them. Keep your mind open and be creative! Here are just a few ideas for those of you looking for something a little different.
Conservationist
Being a conservationist means that you help the government or landowners figure out how to protect the environment. This includes keeping track of what is going into the air, water, and the ground. As a conservationist you can help raise officials’ awareness of pollution in their area or how the ecological balance can be protected. You may be asked to find ways to do this in the most inexpensive way possible.
These green jobs generally require at least a Bachelor’s degree. Agriculture, environmental science, natural resource management, ecology, or biology are common degrees people get if they want to get one of these green careers.
Geoscientist
Being a geoscientist is very much what it sounds like. You are a scientist who studies the earth, such as its structure, composition, physical aspects, and basically how it works. These scientists commonly help other scientists learn more about the environment, how to protect it, and how to fix what damage has been done to it. These green jobs require a Master’s degree in a field such as earth science or geology.
Regional Planner
Those who have green careers as regional planners work hand in hand with developers and the community. They help communities figure out what the best ways to use space and resources is, while keeping growth and future change in mind. If you would love knowing that you helped to shape your community and make it a good place for the present and future, this would be a great job for you. A Master’s degree in regional planning is generally required.
Landscape Architects
Green jobs like this also affect the community and how it is formed. They help design many important areas in the community, such as schools, parks, malls, and golf-courses. If you get a job like this, you would be responsible for making sure that the areas you work on are made to be functional and great to look at, while still being environmentally friendly.
The best features of all these jobs are the salary and the fact that you are helping the environment. To obtain one of these great environmental careers you need to be green job ready, which includes going to school to obtain a renewable energy certification or an environmental degree. Once you have your degree or certification, you can get a job in a field you are passionate about and be paid well for your efforts to improve the world we live in.

10 Jobs to Jump Start Your Green Career
October 21, 2010 by admin
Green is the hot color for this year’s job market. With the Department of Labor promising $100 million in Energy Training Partnership Grants in 2010, green jobs are growing faster than the dandelions on your front lawn.
But, you might be asking yourself, what exactly is a green job? Do I have to have a green thumb to get one? And how much green is it going to put in my pocket? The definition is constantly expanding, but in general, a green job is a job that helps protect and preserve the environment and our natural resources. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, traditional green jobs have included:
Environmental Engineers are responsible for controlling pollution and cleaning up waste.
Environmental Engineering Technicians conduct tests and operate the equipment that helps prevent, control and clean up environmental waste and pollution.
Environmental Scientists and Specialists study our environment and indentify sources of pollution that damage our surroundings and our health.
Environmental Science and Protective Technicians assist environmental scientists by taking samples and conducting lab work.
But don’t let those definitions limit you—you don’t have to be a scientist or researcher to get into a green trade. As concern about our natural resources and global warming grows, so does the number of industries the movement touches. The result is that new career paths are springing up constantly to fit those demands. Here’s a little taste of what they include:
Energy retrofitters, also known as building performance contractors, evaluate your home and install new energy technologies to save money and reduce your carbon footprint.
Organic famers and organic food distributors bring organic and/or sustainably grown agricultural products to businesses and consumers.
Green carpenters use environmentally certified and recycled wood to create green furniture for homes and businesses.
Wind turbine operators install, maintain, and service modern wind turbines.
Sustainability consultants help organizations implement sustainable methods in their everyday business practices.
Solar installers, also known as photovoltaic installers, install solar panels into homes and businesses.
These are just a few of the hundreds of industries who are “turning green.” And each one of industry doesn’t just need engineers to design their environmentally-friendly products or services, they need workers to build them, advertisers to market them, salespeople to sell them, human resources staff to manage the salespeople and the advertisers and the workers . . . get the picture? There’s a green job out there for everyone, no matter what you’re background is.
So if you’re looking to make a difference and become a part of the green movement, there are more opportunities than ever. And who knows, with some outside-of-the-box thinking, you could even find a way to transform your current job into the hot green career of the year.
