Odds are, you probably own a gasoline or diesel powered vehicle. If you are considering making the switch to an electric car, there are some things you should consider before getting started.

Should I Buy a New Vehicle?

If you are in the market for an electric car, the easiest option is to simply go new car shopping. There are a few production electric cars out there right now. Be aware that while an electric car is more expensive up front, if it suits your commuting needs you can save a lot of money in the long run on fuel costs. Most production electric cars have more limited range than a gasoline vehicle, but as long as you don’t drive more than 50 miles on a daily basis, they will be just fine. Along with the electric car, you will usually receive a power station for your home, where you plug your car in to recharge overnight. Remember, power isn’t free, and has to come from somewhere. You can expect a rise in your electricity bill, but usually you are still saving money over a gasoline vehicle. And check the laws in the state you live in! California, for instance, offers some very nice incentives to owners of green alternative fuel vehicles. This includes electrically powered vehicles.

Converting Your Existing Vehicle

If you just don’t want to give up your gas guzzlers style or storage capacity, it is possible to convert your vehicle to run on electricity. Just be aware from the get go that this is an expensive project that is definitely not a do-it-yourself deal. Pretty much every active component of your vehicle will have to be replaced with versions designed for electric vehicles. But the costs will probably not be much more than purchasing an electric vehicle, and you may like the results much better.

Get in touch with some companies that specialize in alternative energy sources, such as solar power or fuel cells. Even if they can’t help you with your specific project, they can probably point you towards someone that can. The company that you finally settle on will have quite a few issues to discuss with you, such as the battery types, or whether to go pure electric, or hybrid. Electricity-generating fuel cells are another option, but can be expensive to maintain. There are many different ways to go when talking electric car conversions, and many need to be worked out with someone who knows what is what.

It’s All Worth It

But once you actually perform the conversion, you will be amazed at the difference. Electric vehicles are nearly silent, and you’ll never have to pump gas again. They have a very futuristic feel about them, with computerized systems and displays as finishing touches. And they produce no emissions whatsoever, so you are doing a major favor to the environment. Imagine how much less smog there would be in your city if everyone drove zero emission electric cars.

Converting a car that uses gas into an electric car is not a herculean task. It is as simple as doing minor repairs on your car. Common sense and some basic knowledge about the car parts and their functions are sufficient. These are the 10 steps to be followed to build an electric car out of your traditional car.
1) Gather as much information as possible from all reliable sources.

2) Get the advice and help from somebody who has experience in building electric cars. Join the local Electric Auto Association.

3) Get a traditional gasoline car to be converted into electric car

4) Buy a car EV conversion kit to make your work easier.

5) If you are not a motor mechanic, try to get the help of an experienced mechanic. The setting up of the motor and the power transmission assemblies have to be very accurate and precise. If something goes wrong here, your converted car will not function well and you will regret later for not taking the help of a mechanic. Even if you have all the necessary tools, you may not be able to fix the motor properly.

6) Get the help of somebody to pull the gas engine out of your donor car. If you search in the auto repair shops, you will surely find experienced people to remove the engine from the car. Even if you have to pay some money for doing this work, it is worth paying.

7) Choose a convenient place to work on that is clean, warm and properly ventilated. Ensure that the place has adequate lighting facilities. It shouldn’t be a damp place. Be prepared to spend some time in your work area as long as it takes to finish your conversion work.

In all probability, it is going to take some time because getting all the necessary parts properly checked at the check posts and getting the approval of the authorities while they are being transported is a time consuming business. The rest of the work like dismantling the donor car and fitting it with new electric components will take less time and is comparatively easy.

8) Prepare a schedule for buying the accessories and finishing the work. Think how you are going to work on the conversion project;whether it is going to be a full time job or part time job at nights and weekends. If you are planning to build your electric car slowly working at your leisure times, there is no point in buying all the accessories right at the beginning.

Buy then only as and when needed. Otherwise your work place will be messy and you have to search for the particular item among the many stored there and clean the items from time to time.

If you have an experienced friend to supervise your work, he will be able to help you to buy only the necessary parts at the right time. This is not applicable if you have already bought a complete electric car conversion kit.

9) Search on the internet for more ideas and information. People express their views and experiences on the internet and going through their views will help you to accomplish your work in a better way. Remember that nobody is the final authority in this matter. There is always room for improvement.

10) Publish on the internet what you have experienced while you converted your car into an electric car. There might be people like you wishing to convert their cars into electric cars and your experiences will be valuable to them. Write about the mistakes you committed, the problems you faced and the steps you took to correct your mistakes and solve your problems.

If you took help from somebody in your car conversion project, mention his name in the blog so that others who are in the same situation can make use of his expertise when they are in the process of converting their cars into electric cars.

Before you begin your homemade electric car conversion project, it is best you think about the actual retrofitting process needed. To save time and get your EV out on the road as soon possible, buy a custom electric car conversion kit. All the EV components have been prepared for you. All you have to do is install them on your donor car.
