Calif. recyclers find foreign market for toxic trash
In the soft morning light, the silver-gray mountain of electronic trash did not look especially hazardous. But it was. Amid the printers and keyboards, fax machines and coffee makers was enough lead, cadmium and other toxic material to poison California watersheds for centuries. “This is the problem,” said Jim Taggart, president of ECS Refining in Santa Clara, Calif., where the e-waste was …

Tips to Save Gas ? Helpful Ways to Save Gas and Achieve Gas Mileage Improvements

August 30, 2010 by

These days, prices of goods are skyrocketing like there’s no tomorrow. And with oil prices leading the pack, you find yourself stuck between your car and a hard place. Luckily, I have some helpful tips to save gas that will spare you from having to give up breakfast cereals for a whole month.

These proven tips to save gas have been accumulated from different places and people. Hopefully, they will be able to help you cut back on your gas use and make the most of the situation.

1. Carpool

Okay, I know what you’re thinking here. Out of all the tips to save gas, this would probably be your last resort. In your mind, you don’t want to carpool because it leads to all sorts of annoying circumstances. Your neighbor or your officemate will probably use this opportunity to pry at your personal life.

Well, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Honestly, carpooling is not that bad. After all, you have the option of choosing the people you want to ride with. And people are not that bad once you get to ride with them.

Think of it as a learning experience. Besides, you don’t have to carpool everyday. You can do this every other day or only during Wednesdays and Thursdays.

2. Make sure your gas cap is closed tight.

This is one of those overlooked tips to save gas that could save you a lot of money. Apparently, gas can still evaporate if you leave your gas cap a little loose. You might think that what evaporates isn’t really a lot, but everything adds up.

It’s possible that in two weeks, you would have lost a good amount of gas that could perhaps have driven you from the office to your home. Add that up to a whole year of meaningless gas evaporation and you’ll see that it’s indeed a big deal.

3. Learn how to step on the brake properly.

Every driver knows how to brake, but not everyone knows how to do it properly. You’ve seen the movies where cars screech to a halt. You’ve probably experienced riding in a car which gives you a headache every time it stops.

Aside from being signs of poor braking, such practices also lead to an unnecessary use of gas. How so? Well, every time you brake, you also have to accelerate again afterwards. I’m not telling you to stop braking. That would be a dangerous tip to save gas.

What I’m saying is that if you’re an observant driver, you don’t need to brake all the time. If the cars ahead of you are moving at a steady pace, you can just release your foot from the gas pedal, slow down and anticipate the traffic flow.

Hope these useful tips to save gas help you achieve better gas mileage and allow you to have more money left in your pocket.

How Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars Can Give You the Gas Mileage Improvements You Have Been Looking for

July 1, 2010 by

Gas prices may have dropped by a couple of cents over the last few days but with the current trends you can bet that it won’t be long before they go up yet again. The days of cheap oil and gasoline are sadly a thing of the past. So if you have any sense you should still be looking for ways to make gas mileage improvements on your vehicles by any means that you can. Along with the latest and most promising ways to improve gas mileage and get more mpg are the hydrogen fuel cell cars.

Hydrogen fuel cell cars are just standard cars that have been converted to use water as a supplement to ordinary gasoline. This is achieved with the use of a DIY hydrogen fuel cell or (homemade hydrogen generator), a small device that provides HHO gas. This HHO gas is then mixed with the ordinary gasoline + air mixture in your cars engine. As this mixture of gases burns with a lot more efficiency and power it gives you fantastic gas mileage improvements. (Notice that I said “supplement” as there are some claims out there that suggest you can run your cars on water alone, which is ridiculous)

One of the best things about hydrogen fuel cell cars (apart from the great gas mileage improvements you get) is that you can convert your existing vehicle easily and cheaply. You do not need to take it to a garage or have a mechanic working on it for days on end. With just a few inexpensive parts that you can buy at any hardware store, and a simple to follow guide to show you how to build a hydrogen fuel cell you can convert your cars in a matter of hours.

Once you have converted your cars into hydrogen fuel cell cars you can expect to get gas mileage improvements of between 35% and 50%. You will also notice that you have a smoother ride and a lot more power, this is due to the cleaner burn that you get, and you will also expect to get less wear on your engine and a lot less harmful exhaust emissions being pumped into the atmosphere.

Another plus with the DIY hydrogen fuel cell is that it is completely reversible, so if you ever wanted to take it out again you can do so without causing any damage to your engine. But with the great gas mileage improvements that you will get the only reason I can see you wanting to remove it for are if you sell your car and want to keep your homemade hydrogen generator to use in your next vehicle.

To learn more about hydrogen fuel cell cars or to find a first class guide to show you how to build a hydrogen fuel cell you should be able to find more than enough information on the internet. With everyone trying to find ways to make gas mileage improvements to their vehicles the DIY hydrogen fuel cell has really caught on and there are dozens of good guides to show you exactly how to go about it.

How to Get Gas Mileage Improvements by Using the Right Tire

June 1, 2010 by

With the price of gas going through the roof, drivers are on the lookout for any way to make gas mileage improvements to their vehicles, and there seems to be an ever increasing number of so called gas mileage secrets popping up. Everything from cars that run on water with the help of hydrogen car kits, to the many tips and tricks used by the hypermiler.

Surprisingly enough there is a way to help you make gas mileage improvements even before you get to the gas pumps, and that is at the tire store. This is because many drivers have not heard about “tire efficiency” and this is due to very little information being available on the standardized ratings of tires. Many drivers could actually be adding to poor fuel economy by choosing the wrong type of tire.

There are moves in progress to get tire manufacturers to begin labelling tires for fuel efficiency. Regulations call for a programme that would create a national labelling system, this system would be similar to the energy star ratings of household appliances. In this way you will be able to choose the tire that would give you the best gas mileage improvements for your particular make and model of vehicle.

The modern tires available today are in fact far more efficient than they were 30 years ago. Rolling resistance (the power that is lost due to flexing) has been reduced by as much as 50%. And with the advances of tread patterns and the use of lighter rubber compounds they are now even more economical.

Even so efficiency can vary by up to half from tire to tire, which can reduce a vehicles fuel economy by up to 10%. Sadly this tire labelling system is yet to be put into action, so many of us are still driving on tires that instead of giving us gas mileage improvements, are actually costing us more in poor fuel economy.

However there are still ways to make sure that you are getting the best from your tires.
1) Always keep your tires inflated to the correct pressures as a poorly inflated tire can reduce fuel economy by 3.5%
2) When replacing your tires try to buy the same brand and model that came as original equipment on your car. (Car manufacturers are careful to fit the most efficient tires to their vehicles).
3) Don’t replace your tires until they need to be replaced as new tires are less fuel efficient than worn ones. (but don’t drive on bald tires as this is not only illegal it is dangerous) So check tire treads regularly.
4) If your tires show signs of uneven wear, such as a feathered appearance where one side is worn more than the other then you may have alignment or balance problems, either of which will reduce fuel economy.

So you see there are a few little gas mileage secrets that you can use to increase your fuel economy without going to the extremes of the hypermiler, just by using the right tires and keeping them in good running order you can achieve surprisingly good gas mileage improvements.

Discover for yourself how to make real gas mileage improvements and cut your gasoline consumption in half with simple Step-By-Step guides to show you how.
