For 4,000 years, the Chinese people have been using green tea as treatment for everything from headaches to depression. However, it is only in recent years that the Western world has caught up and realised the heath benefits of drinking green tea.

The benefits of drinking tea and specifically the health benefits of green tea have been the subject of many a test study.  In addition to the claims of green tea being an excellent antioxidant, additional benefits may include the prevention of cancer, protecting your heart, preventing arthritis and protecting your liver.

Preventing Cancer

One health benefit of green tea may be its ability to prevent cancer.  In the 1994 edition of the Journal of National Cancer Institute, the results of an epidemiological study stated that one of the health benefits of drinking green tea is that it can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by up to 60%. Based on this possible correlation between the regular use of green tea and a lower risk for cancer further research is being undertaken.

Preliminary findings suggest that the health benefits of green tea may prevent cancer in many of the body’s vital organs.  These organs include the urinary bladder, the entire upper and lower digestive tract and pancreas.

Protecting Your Heart

An important health benefit of green tea is the antioxidants found in green tea. These antioxidants have shown promise in reducing levels of cholesterol, minimizing cardiac disease and controlling hypertension.  Specifically, a daily cup of tea, eight and a half ounces, was consumed by those participating in a case study.  After 25 years, participants had fewer incidents of heart attacks compared to those who did not drink the green tea.

Additional studies show that antioxidants were beneficial in minimizing the bonding of blood cells. The implications of this benefit would be the reduction in clotting which is associated with strokes and heart disease.

Preventing Arthritis

Another health benefit of green tea is the possible prevention and soothing of arthritis and its painful symptoms.  Research has shown a strong component of green tea to be its ability to perform as an agent to reduce inflammation.  Certain studies suggest that the antioxidants in green tea delay the arthritic process as well as minimize the painful symptoms of those affected with arthritis. 

Protecting Your Liver

Another health benefit of green tea is the possible protection of your liver.  Preliminary research suggests a strong correlation between the antioxidants found in green tea and the function of the liver.  The liver acts as a filter within the body and rids the body of toxins.  Some of these toxins include the ingredients found in alcohol, the air we breathe, food eaten, water consumed, cigarettes smoked, and so on.  The health benefit of green tea strongly indicates a protection of the cells that comprise the liver as well as stimulating and strengthening the immune system within the body.

Other Health Benefits

Aside from medicinal value, green tea can also offer other health benefits, especially in the fitness field. Drinking green tea can cause a person to burn down more calories. A recent study on the health benefits of green tea shows that the drink can help dieters. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1999, men who take both caffeine and green tea burn down more calories than men who only take caffeine or a placebo.

Green Tea comes from the plant Camellia Sinensis, and is grown and picked all over the world. There are different green teas, and many originate from China. The secret of the health of tea lies in the way it is processed. Green tea was drunk for medicinal purposes in China, as well as for bringing peace and serenity to body and mind. Western culture has since adopted green tea as a beverage for health and well being. According to studies, green tea may help protect against many health conditions, due to the high level of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants within the leaf. Studies have been conducted that show there are many health benefits from drinking green tea.

Green tea leaves are picked in thousands of acres of lush tea gardens. The gardens are in China, Formosa (an island in Taiwan), Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Japan, India, Kenya and other exotic areas of the world. China is perhaps the largest of green tea producers. There are different types of green teas that come from China. Green teas are distributed flat leafed, whole, in a ball, rolled lengthwise or twisted. Rolled teas, or teas in a ball include Gunpowder and Chun Mee, and are among the more affordable teas. Others include Lung Ching (Dragon’s Well) that helps with tiredness, Gu Zhang Mao Jian, Ping Cha and Xia Zhou Bi Feng. These teas are best drunk in the day and are refreshing and smooth. Higher quality green teas are normally twisted or flat. These tea leaves have a silver color and include the teas Pi Lo Chun, Shi Feng, and Dong Yang Dong Bai. When steeped, the leaves produce a pale green and pale yellow color. All green teas are processed before distribution, however the nutrients are left in the leaves.

The tea leaf from the Camellia Sinensis plant is processed differently for green teas than black teas and oolongs. In green teas, the tea leaves are laid out on mats for steaming. The leaves can also be pan heated or baked. This process prevents fermentation or oxidation (oxygen leaving the leaves). The green color is than left in the leaf, thus keeping all of the nutrients inside the tea. The nutrients consist of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in the tea. Vitamins and minerals include: iron, potassium, sodium, carotene, B1, B2, A, D, and Vitamin C. The antioxidants in the tea are actually molecules that co-exist with free radicals. Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms in the body that, when left unchecked, grow and multiply, causing damage to otherwise healthy cells. Free radicals can cause diseases such as cancer, heart disease, premature aging and other diseases. The antioxidants guard against this damage, and help keep cells healthy.

One such antioxidant is EGCG or epigallocatechin (one of the cathechins) and, according to studies, is one hundred times more powerful than Vitamin C and twenty- five times more powerful than Vitamin E. Other antioxidants include, flavanoids, polyphenols, tannins and theanine. Flavanoids are the bright colored compounds found in fresh fruit and vegetables, and may help fight infections. Polyphenols are phytochemicals found in high amounts within green tea. These phytochemicals help in prevention of diseases like heart disease and cancer. One cup of green tea may possibly provide 10 mg of polyphenols, and has antioxidant levels higher than one serving of spinach, carrots, broccoli, or strawberries. Tannins are a group of flavanoids, phenols and polyphenols compounds found in green tea. Tannins are produced by plants and are resistant to fermentation and digestion. Theanine is an amino acid (building block of protein) that has a tranquilizing effect on the brain. The Japanese green tea Sencha contains theanine. Three to four cups contains 100-200 mg of theanine.

Green tea can help prevent oxidative damage within the body, when taken with a balanced diet. A group of volunteers, according to a study drank two cups of green tea per day, while another group ate their balanced diet, but did not drink the tea. The group who drank the green tea had a large increase in their plasma antioxidant levels, decreased oxidative damage in lymphocytes (white blood cells), and a significant decrease in LDL or bad cholesterol in comparison to the non-tea drinking group. Other health benefits of drinking green tea include: lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, fighting carcinogenic bacteria, reducing tumors and mutations, helping fight headaches, lifting spirits and depression, fighting halitosis (bad breath), and improving digestion.

The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.

Green tea versus green tea extract. We believe there are many benefits to drinking green tea every day. It gives you all the benefits of green tea. It gets more water into your system. It makes your tummy feel full. It is a comforting ritual. However if you are not able to enjoy the actual green tea beverage, you may still get some of the benefits by taking green tea extract in supplement form.

Many varieties of green tea have been created in countries where it is grown that can differ substantially due to variable growing conditions, processing and harvesting time. Over the last few decades green tea has begun to be subjected to many scientific and medical studies to determine the extent of its long-purported health benefits, with some evidence suggesting regular green tea drinkers may have lower chances of heart disease and developing certain types of cancer.

While green tea polyphenols have been shown to inhibit the growth of human lung cancer cells in test tubes, few studies have investigated the link between green tea consumption and lung cancer in people and even these studies have been conflicting. One population-based study found that Okinawan tea (similar to green tea but partially fermented) was associated with decreased lung cancer risk, particularly among women. A second study revealed that green tea and black tea significantly increased the risk of lung cancer. As with colon and esophageal cancers, further studies are needed before researchers can draw any conclusions about green tea and lung cancer.

Health Benefit of Green Tea: Cancer Prevention

There have already been numerous studies that prove that green tea helps protect drinkers against cancer. Statistics show that cancer rates are lower in countries where people regularly drink green tea. Research has shown that polyphenols are one source of the health benefit of green tea. Researchers believe that these substances found in green tea are influential in preventing the development of cancer.

Studies involving animal tests have shown that green tea reduces the formation of tumors for cancers of the skin, esophagus, bladder, pancreas, ovary cancer and prostate. The antioxidant activity in green tea has

been reported to produce such results. Researchers are also of the belief that polyphenols are essential in destroying cancerous cells and stopping their progression.

Skin Cancer

Scientific research suggests that the main polyphenol in green tea, which is called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and other green tea polyphenols possess anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. One study

has been done on the health benefit of green tea on the skin. The study showed that drinking tea helps prevent the onset and growth of skin tumors.

Esophageal Cancer

Animal studies have also been conducted and they showed that green tea polyphenols help stop the growth of esophageal cancer cells. However, studies done on people have various results regarding the health

benefit of green tea. One study showed that green tea consumption is an effective way to be protected from esophageal cancer, specifically among women. But another study showed that drinking green tea increased

the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This shows that before green tea can be recommended for esophageal cancer prevention, more research has to be done.

Bladder Cancer

A few studies have been conducted on the health benefit of green tea on the human bladder. Research has been done to determine if there’s a connection between bladder cancer and consumption of green tea. One

study revealed that women who drank green tea reduced their probability of developing bladder cancer. The study was followed with another one revealing that patients with bladder cancer, specifically men, who

consumed green tea had a significantly improved chance of surviving compared to those who did not drink tea.

Pancreatic Cancer

Research has also been done on the health benefit of green tea on the pancreas. A study found that men and women who drank green tea had lesser chances of developing cancer in the pancreas. However, the study

didn’t particularly point out that green tea was exclusively responsible for reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer. Researchers still need further studies before they can start recommending green tea for pancreatic

cancer prevention.

Ovarian Cancer

In China, a study was conducted on patients with ovarian cancer. It was observed that women who drank a cup of green tea a day were able to survive longer and lived the longest compared to women who did not drink

tea at all.

Prostate Cancer

Green tea extracts have been shown in laboratory studies to prevent the development of prostate cancer cells in test tubes. A large study showed that people who drank green tea with increasing frequency, quantity

and duration reduced their risk of developing prostate cancer.

Green Tea helps to stimulate immune health, which is your body’s first line of defense against disease and infection! The immune system consists of white blood cells, or leukocytes. The main organs in the immune system are the bone marrow, spleen, thymus and lymph nodes. Incredibly, your bone marrow manufactures 1 billion white blood cells every day!

The Immune System
There are different types of leukocytes such as neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytles, monocytes and macrophages. These patrol the body and protect it from germs and other foreign bodies. Each of these targets specific pathogens like parasites, bacteria, fungi, allergies, pathogens, virus, tumor cells, and other foreign bodies. Leukocytes are found all over the body and in the bloodstream. These natural sentries of the body have an in-built memory system that helps the body to become immune to a second attack.

Cellular life is very intriguing! There are about 200 kinds of cells in your body and your body is engaged in a continuous process of replacing old cells with new ones. Every second there are about 50 million cells in your body that die and are replaced by new ones. This process is so controlled that your body has the right number of cells of each type at any given time.

Sometimes cells commit suicide, which is called apostosis. Apostosis is the body’s way of self-destroying cells that are not normal. Abnormal multiplication of cells could be caused by free radical activity and can lead to cancer.

It is interesting to note that all the cells in your body recognize each other. Cells that belong to one organ or tissue also recognize each other and this is what keeps cells from the same organ or tissue together. Leukocytes recognize cells that are abnormal or are foreign to the body. Leukocytes quickly work to prevent them from invading your system.

This is basically how the immune system works. It is therefore very vital that we take pro-active measures to support the function of our immune system.

Immune Health and Nutrition
Immune health works at the cellular level where basic health begins. Cellular function is supported by good nutrition. The relationship between nutrition and immune health is explained by Dr. George L. Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., associate director, division of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He says, “Nutrition plays an important part in maintaining immune function. Green Tea Shows Anti-Viral, Anti-Fungal and Anti-Bacterial Properties.
In vitro studies suggest that EGCG inhibits the adenovirus from replicating itself. This virus is one of many that are responsible for causing the common cold according to studies conducted at the University of Sherbrooke in Canada and also at the University of Florida. The latter study indicated that Green Tea drinkers had an enhanced ability to fight common colds and flu because of an increase in a specific type of immune cells known as interferon gamma T cells. The study showed that Green Tea drinkers had a 28% increase in interferon gamma T cells with a 26% increase in the secretion of antigens as opposed to those who did not consume Green Tea.1,2

EGCG also helps to inhibit the influenza virus from replicating and also exhibits antifungal properties.3-4

Green Tea Helps to Protect the Liver
Green tea protects the liver by stimulating the immune system because of the action of powerful antioxidants reducing the damage done by toxins due to excess alcohol consumption and cigarette smoke. Green tea has become much popular these days as it has got numerous good aspects on the health. Several researches held to know about this aspect, reveals that consuming green tea can prevent or reduce several diseases.
