WISC Channel 3 News Coverage of Wisconsin’s EcoCAR Program The University of Wisconsin – Madison recently took delivery of their EcoCAR vehicle. EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge is a three-year collegiate student engineering competition that focuses on vehicle integration of advanced propulsion technologies. The competition challenges 17 universities across North America to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles by designing, developing and implementing a vehicle propulsion system that minimizes fuel consumption and emissions and encourages energy diversity, while still maintaining utility, safety and performance. EcoCAR was established by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and General Motors (GM), and it is sponsored by the Government of Canada, as well as other high-profile sponsors, including the California Air Resources Board and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Wisconsin will be implementing a Plug-In Series-Parallel design that will optimize vehicle efficiency through a hybrid of both electric and E85 components. This architecture was designed during year one of competition and the students are looking to validate these designs as they build the vehicle for competition in Spring 2010. During year three, this work will be refined to the level of a hybrid car ready for production.
