How Businesses Can Improve Their Bottom Line With Single Stream Recycling

October 25, 2010 by

The current economy is making nearly everyone re-evaluate their expenditures and look for ways to improve their bottom line. Profit margins are tighter than ever and every step in the right direction makes a difference. Many businesses may be surprised to learn that they can improve their bottom line with single stream recycling containers.

Single stream recycling refers to the most convenient recycling method available today: everything that is recyclable goes into the same recycling bin and is picked up and processed by a service provider. Recycling bins come in a variety of sizes and shapes and they can be customized to match your company’s decor while reducing your trash expense and limiting the amount of material disposed of in landfills.

Garbage Is Expensive

Every business owner knows that garbage collection and disposal can become prohibitively expensive. Until recent years, there were no other options except to rent a dumpster and pay a garbage service for the removal of your trash. The environmental movement of the 1970s and the realization that landfill space is limited and that toxins seeping into the soil are less than desirable has lead to a boom in the recycling industry.

Business owners can take advantage of these new resource management options through the use of single stream recycling bins. Recycling programs cut your monthly trash expense significantly. Instead of paying to have recyclable materials thrown into landfills, business owners can install recycling containers within their facilities that will cut their garbage expenses significantly, improving their bottom line.

Turn The Tables On Trash

This shift in resource management has resulted in substantial savings for many businesses already. Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle found that they reduced their garbage expense by $170,000 in the first year after installing recycling containers and implementing a recycling program. They also reduced their contributions to local landfills by 80%. Those numbers are significant for any business and the recycling program at Virginia Mason Hospital will only become more efficient and productive as patients and employees become more familiar with the new recycling containers and the program.

Garbage can turn from a liability to an asset with the simple implementation of single stream recycling containers in only a matter of days for businesses of all sizes. Single stream recycling companies are able to provide individual assessments of the contents of your current garbage flow to provide reliable predictions on the expected outcome of implementing such a program and installing recycling containers throughout your facility.

Convenience And Service

Single stream recycling containers incur far greater participation rates than item-by-item recycling bins, simply by being so convenient. Participants do not need to sort anything. Paper, plastic, and metal all go into the same recycling bin; the materials are then sorted at the processing plant. This added convenience and individualized service go a long way to reduce the garbage expense paid by your business each month.

Reduced garbage expenses and improved goodwill from your customers for being environmentally responsible will both go a long way to improve your company’s bottom line and the overall health of our planet.

Environmental Marketing Tips For Small Businesses

September 2, 2010 by

While marketing strategies has not seemed to change in the last fifty years, there is a new surge to give a green PR spin on companies now. This is a sudden trend that promotes the environmentally friendly aspects of businesses and industries, and obviously this is helping companies reach new markets by using green public relations strategies.

Environmental PR can be done for almost any company. Even if you are a business that solely works in an office providing a service to your customers. You can easily promote your green initiatives by letting people know how to you are switching to a paperless office to save waste, or how you have put in action donations or volunteer hours to environmental groups. For businesses that are deep into pollution issues may have a tougher time getting people to notice their green initiatives, but this is all the more reason that this type of company will need environmental PR services.

If a company is struggling to look good in the eyes of the public because of past danced with pollution or some aspect of contributing to global warming, the company will need to put into action many large green initiatives to get the public off their back about the pollution and onto their new plans for making the world better. Companies cannot just volunteer with an environmental group and say they are doing their part. Instead, they will need to point out the aspects of their company that is green. The company will also need to make plans in order change their current procedures so that they can being to incorporate green initiatives into all aspects of business.

Announcing your green initiatives is just the first step. You can tell the public exactly what they want to hear, but if you do not eventually follow through with it, they will catch on. So it is best to work out a plan where you can add these environmental changes slowly. This way you have time to work out all the logistics, but you can still announce your green plan to the public.

If you need an example of a company that has great green PR, you will want to look at something like Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. They are an environmentally friendly company all around, and they use this to their advantage when it comes to PR and advertising. It works because they have found the right green PR firm that will play up the best in their environmental works.

Even if you do not think you can play up anything green abut your company, you will find that environmental PR experts will always be able to find something that you can talk about when in comes to helping the environment. Everyone can make a difference, so companies should be at the front of the movement. Even if the company has to make changes in order for it happen, you will get more attention for your efforts than your ignorance about environmental issues.

According to official statistics every year in the UK alone 2 million TV sets are thrown away and end up on rubbish tips, over 6 million electrical items are also simply thrown away many of which could be reused or recycled. Also in an average year over 15 million mobile phones are upgraded but only 3 million are currently being recycled. This leaves a massive 12 million phones which are being thrown in the bin and not being recycled; many of these are ending up at landfill sites and causing damage to the environment. Also over 60 million ink cartridges used in printers and photocopiers are being used every year, statistics show that only 10% of these are being recycled.

All of the regular household items listed above can be recycled and many can earn us all some extra money. Mobile Phones can be sent into specialist recycling companies which can be found online, for the very old models it’s likely that they will only be worth a minimal amount, the newer models however can be sold for as much as £400 each with free postage. Ink cartridges can also be sent into companies who will either pay you in cash or provide you with credits to receive either free ink or other products in the future. Other items that can be recycled on the internet to earn some extra money include CD’s, DVD’s and old Computer Games just to name a few.

Offline recycling of aluminium cans can be taken to specialized recycling centres where for collecting around 70 you would be paid around 50p. Around the UK there are over 300 centres that will pay in cash for cans.

It’s not just Individuals who can earn money for their recycling efforts; online recycling companies are also looking for representatives of businesses, organizations and charities to send in their old mobile phones. They will also be paid in cash direct to the business and if enough are sent a courier will be sent to pick them up to save time and effort.

Businesses ‘Going Green’

June 12, 2010 by

With the preservation of our planet’s natural beauty on everyone’s mind today, ‘Going Green’ not only helps the environment and protects our natural resources, but involves only minor lifestyle changes and minimal expense for individuals searching for ways to contribute to the ‘Green Earth’ preservation effort. When shopping for your favorite signature B&B recipe ingredients, bring along your own reusable bags. Green reusable bags reduce the amount of paper and plastic bags that are typically discarded after a single shopping trip. Plastic bags take thousands of years to decompose at local landfills, and if disposed of in our oceans, are often confused by sea creatures as food such as jellyfish, and they can be killed upon consuming them. There are many ways to save on electricity usage as well, therefore reducing power demands on local coal and nuclear power plants. Wash your clothes in cold water, open windows for natural lighting, turn off unneeded lights and appliances, and unplug or shutdown unused electronics such as computers and laptops. Automobiles are one of the largest contributors to global pollution, as every gallon of gasoline produces 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, so keep your vehicle tuned-up and tires properly inflated to conserve fuel. Going the speed limit and avoiding rapid acceleration also will save on gas costs.

Shop and support your local farmers markets. You can cook fresh, organic meals impressing your bed and breakfast guests while assisting a local farmer who uses less or perhaps no pesticides that contaminate soil and can seep into your water supply. Buy a reusable water bottle to take with you on the go and re clean with soap and water after each use. This will eliminate the buying of bottled water at the store, and save you money as most bottled water costs are comparable to soda or juice prices. And, below 20% of all water bottles purchased today are actually recycled, and they are quickly becoming the main trash item in most of our countries landfills. Also, most plastic water bottles are made with petroleum, and when the bottle warms, can leach dangerous chemicals into your water. As you can see, ‘Going Green’ does not require paradigm shifts in your current lifestyle, and with minor changes you can help preserve our planet’s beauty for generations to come. And don’t forget, be sure to share with your guests the various ‘Green’ environmental techniques your bed and breakfast inn has implemented, because we all care about the future of this beautiful planet and the preservation of it’s illustrious future.
