The new sophists
In classical Athens, public life became dominated by clever and smart-sounding sophists. These mellifluous “really wise guys” made money and gained influence by their rhetorical boasts to “prove” the most amazing “thinkery” that belied common sense. We are living in a new age of sophism — but without a modern equivalent of Socrates to remind the public just how silly our highly credentialed and …

2011 Morgan Eva GT Debut at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2010

The Morgan Motor Company has been making new cars all along, but some people seem to have forgotten that fact as most of their “new” models looked a heckuva lot like their old models. That started to change with the introduction of their Aero cars a few years ago — and we predict the name “Morgan” will be a little more common once their latest concept hits showrooms. The company took the wraps off their new EvaGT in Pebble Beach on Sunday, right in front of the Pebble Beach Lodge on the concept lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. We had seen a partial sketch a few weeks ago, but holy wow is this car stunning in person. The basic stats are these: It uses a 3.0-liter BMW straight six that produces 306 horsepower, a six-speed automatic or manual transmission, weighs just 2755 pounds, gets 40 miles per gallon (Imperial) and can scoot from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Filed under Going Green
Fairfield Iowa is the home to one of the most progressive efforts to create a sustainable community in the United States. In a press conference held last September, Mayor Ed Malloy emphasized the timeliness of this event. “This theme of energy independence is on the lips of everyone. We understand why we have to get there. It’s important for reasons of National security. It’s important for creating a sustainable future for our children, and our grand children, and beyond.” “Something good is definitely happening in terms energy independence and sustainability in Iowa, and in Fairfield specifically” says Mike Love of the Beach Boys. “The Heartland of America is perfectly positioned to lead the world in this energy independence movement. So, go green Fairfield!” Live interviews with concert producer David Lynch Foundation, Fairfield’s Mayor Ed Malloy, and a host of leaders in sustainability from the SE Iowa region will delve into details of the massive effort to provide solutions and education in twenty-three (23) SE Iowa counties. The outreach is part of a pubic-private-partnership between Iowa State University Extension, the City of Fairfield Iowa’s Commission on Sustainability, and a multitude of private citizens all working to create a sustainable future for Iowa and the world.
