I produce hydrogen via electrolysis, chemical reactions, and biomass reactions. I'm running on ethanol/gas 50/50 blend in my 3 vehicle home fleet, secured the permit to produce ethanol, and have made ethanol fuel. Evaluating ethanol because it's a liquid fuel available as E85 at fueling stations here in Michigan and within 4 weeks I cut my gasoline use by roughly 50% while I finish my development work, raise capital, and acquire the materials for the push to finish up the hydrogen projects. The president of the American Hydrogen Association's book: 'The Solar Hydrogen Civilization', lays out the roadmap for the transition from fossil fuels to hydrogen fuels and carbon based manufacturing. Ethanol is also a Hydrogen fuel, but when made from corn is marginally efficient. Now there are lots of different technologies to handle safe hydrogen gas for cars, but with the new administration, I fear private research & development will cease as companies will now have to wait for the government to tell them what technology will be used. This has always been a big problem with big government types. For the auto industry to retool with the Government bailout that is being asked for over the next few months, Congress will demand some commitment to some design features or fuel types. This money will come from taxes on the private sector and will lock in the fuel type, may the best Lobbyist win. Once this is done, most large scale research into other options will either cease or be greatly reduced. Unless Nancy Pelsoi, the great engineer she is, chooses Hydrogen, you will probably never get a chance to try Hydrogen. Right now batteries are all the rage. The American car companies have failed to bring a single advanced technology vehicle to the road in many years, largely in fear of how Government would stick it's nose in. I own an awesome 2003 Prius, originally build for the Japanese market, and a 2007 Saturn Vue Hybrid, American built, which absolutely sucks. The Chevy Volt is currently set for 2010, but that has been a moving target for many years and have been turned off by my bad GM experience. I want another Prius. You can look up something called Brown's Gas, which is a way to make Hydrogen for your existing car, but due to EPA restriction, you are not allowed to improve an already approved car without getting a new approval for several thousand dollars. The era of the home engineer is long over, and big government loves it, keeps them in the smaller loop. The ideas set below seem impressive, but interfere with the emission control systems of every new car and it is illegal (again government at it's finest) to tamper with the emission control systems (yes plural, every car has at least 3) of your own car even if for the purpose of making it cleaner!
