What is the most fuel efficient car available?

category: Fuel Economy

I am not interested in the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Hybrid Civic, or any other Honda or Toyota hybrid.

What I’m really looking for is the most fuel efficient non hybrid car in the world. Cars like the Aygo, Panda, and Smart.

Although, if someone has turned one of these already fuel efficient small cars (like the Aygo) into a hybrid, I would love to hear about it.

I had a 1993 Manual Transmission Honda Civic that got 40 MPG in the summer. It only had a 70 HP engine, though.

If you don’t care about safely, comfort of power, get a 1989 Honda CRX

    41/50mpg

The key is a small light car with the smallest engine possible.

On paper, it’s a Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, 1.3 litre diesel, 74MPG. In real life, very weirdly, is a Jaguar V6 Twin Turbo Diesel. Top Gear’s economy drive to Blackpool found this out.
