@peterbabine, Yes, pulling in and just flipping your tent open is very nice!

Yes, a setup where the trailer tows your ATV and is towable by your ATV is very doable. I’ve had some folks talk about making one for they snowmobile, but no one has done it to date.

You could set the tent higher up for better bear protection. Since I don’t normally camp in bear areas, I’m not up on the best strategies for protection.

I did a few prototypes to refine and develop the current Explorer Box.

Excellent work. That tent sure went up quick. Nice for when you arrive somewhere after dark.

What about making it ATV towable and also able to tow the ATV?
If you can do that and make it truely bear proof, you’ll have a hands down winner.

About 75% of bear attack fatalities are “dragged from tent” deaths.

    Nice job. Really nice job.
Was that your first try? Or do you have 2 or 3 half built units in your garage?

@Pangolinx1 There is some potential, most of our greasy cooking is over a campfire. I use a camp stove on the front for boiling water and heating stuff up. IMHO the bigger concern with greasy cooking on the trailer is Bears

@rebelstang, depending on the weight and size of the scooter, it would be easy to add a few feet on the front deck. Then use a standard motorcycle “tray”. Search for Compact Camping Concepts to check out our website. Then contact us directly and we can discuss your project.

    That’s cool!
I’m looking for a trailer, for my MustangII. That can haul a scooter & supplies.

    @CompactCamping cool thanks dude!

I was immediately concerned that the galley area is directly below the tent. A fire flare-up from your cookstove has the likelihood of catching the tent on fire. This is going to be especially likely after several camping expeditions when the tent near the galley gets greasy.

@jag217 Hi, we use a 4′x6′ trailer frame. There are multiple frame options. On our Compact Camping Concepts website visit the Trailer Frames section under Products.

Hi, I am sorry but I cannot read the name of your Website. It sounds wonderful for my wife and I, with the exception of her physical limitations. She thinks it may be hard for her to get in and out. I had an old pop-up given to me that was only good for scrapping, although we kept the frame itself, and would like to build a bigger unit than the one on the video. Do you carry bigger tents, etc?

  12. CompactCamping on July 29th, 2010 1:41 pm

Let us know when the video is ready – would love to see it and include it on our website.

@bmclaren45 Sorry for the late reply – you can build one for under $2000 or buy one ready made for about $3800.

@forknuts Absolutely – actually we have the “Explorer Pod” that has the off road suspension. You can check it out on our website just go to Products and “Explorer Pod”. Thanks!

I love rooftop tents. Check it out I just inherited a excellent condition 1957 Heilite , yes 57 in mint condition no rips or mildew in canvas . NO rust on any part EVEN THE SINGLE WHEEL . SAME aluminum as the p-51 Mustangs so its gonna polish up like chrome! Dry weight 325 , T bar Hitching system. Right now only rated to 55 mph (tube tire)but a modern twist with a larger and 80mph rated scooter tire will make it PRISTINE , Look for vid in summer. btw NOT FOR SALE

Thats really cool! I am sure one of those can be adapted for offroad use. My Jeep isnt quite big enough for camping. Well it is but the dog is cramped in the back. Small lift and some matching 32′s that could be a wicked rig!!

  17. ValreeShoe on July 29th, 2010 5:18 pm

    Wow!! That’s so cool!!

  18. bmclaren45 on July 29th, 2010 5:20 pm

Jollyprez, we have three styles of folding tent units available, referred to by many as rooftop tent. Visit our website for details, CompactCampingConcepts .

FixedByDoc, Thanks. An Explorer Box would be nice if you lived a nomadic livestyle. Could even lengthen the tongue and tow it with horses if you wanted to :o)

  21. Jollyprez on July 29th, 2010 7:11 pm

Where can we get that tent?

  22. FixedByDoc on July 29th, 2010 8:00 pm

very sweet concept. I am working on converting my colemen popup and might do a vid on it. I could easily live out of yours. Trade ya lol.

Vidoecamper, The Explorer Box has been designed with a corner block building method. This method is different from the frame-of-reference related to building a house. In building a house, your framing is the main structural element, in this method the plywood panels are. Their purpose is to provide sufficient meat in the corners for a structurally sound joint between the panels.

Using this method it’s easy to build to an Explorer Box that weights under 400 lbs

Videocamper, The Explorer Box is tailored to folks driving compact, fuel effficient vehicles. With minimal room in your tow vehicle, a rolling “Chuck Box” expands your available space, so you have room for camping adventures.

  25. videocamper on July 29th, 2010 9:34 pm

That is an interesting looking project. I often have folks who ask me about ‘trailer’ type arrangements like this. I’ll bet you could do amazing things to reduce weight with the ‘skin and bones’ construction technique discribed in the video responce I posted. Good luck with it. That’s a pretty cool deal!

  26. mike on July 29th, 2010 7:09 pm

That is a great idea! I may get one of those for camping!
