How would you increase fuel efficiency to cars without changing the type of engine or fuel?

category: Fuel Economy

The car is the only thing you have to work with/on.

Fuel efficiency means higher gas mileage or lower fuel consumption.

    Don’t drive like a duche?

Level tire air pressure, take extra things that weigh down car out (clean out trunk). Don’t drive over 60 mph (that is a tough one for most). Change airfilter which is adding something, but it is usually inexpensive. I use an additive (can’t think of name). It cost but with mileage it saves, it is well worth it. These are some things we discussed in earth science.

You’re really cutting out the main factors…

but you could also improve this by doing things like

    - Decrease air resistance/drag by making the body more aerodynamic
    - Use lighter materials to make the car weigh less, overall
    - Change the proportion of driving type that is used (highway vs city), not sure if this falls under acceptable answers

Thee EPA lost us about 17% by retarding our spark to 10 deg.

Use a much smaller engine of the same type.

    better streamlining.
lower weight, removing all items that are not part of the engine or driveline.
removing all electric accessories, such as radio, AC, etc.

tires: higher pressure, no tread, narrow.
Transmission: special low friction gears and bearings, low friction thin lubricant
Differential: special low friction gears and bearings, low friction thin lubricant
Wheel bearings, special low friction bearings, low friction thin lubricant

When all this is done, you should be able to push the car along a level surface with one hand.

The best mileage is obtained at a steady speed of around 30 or 40 mph, depending on the gearing of the engine.

Even better mileage is obtained by the following sequence, optimizing the min and max speeds for the particular engine body combination.
    1. Accelerate slowly to about 30 mph.
    2. put engine in neutral
    3. Shut off engine
    4. Coast down to about 10 mph
    5. start engine
    6. repeat.

better driving habits. Below is some general hints to improve mileage for normal cars and drivers:

Some tips for help with mileage:

keep your tire pressure as high as your owners manual allows.

    drive carefully. accelerate slowly.

when you see a stop (red light, etc) ahead of you, immediately take
your foot off the gas and coast to the stop, braking gently as needed.
This is particularly important for hybrids as the regenerative braking
    works only under gentle braking.

    no roof rack

    keep the car maintained properly.

If your owners manual says premium fuel required, use it.

on the open highway, drive as slowly as your patience allows. I found
that shifting from 75 to 65 increased my mileage by 20%.

Use cruise control. Steady speed helps mileage.

Do not idle. let the car warm only for 30 seconds before driving off.
If you are going to be stopped at a long light, shut the engine off.

Don’t carry around a lot of useless junk in the trunk of the car.

Avoid long lines at drive-through windows. You’ll save money by going
    inside.

And the biggest one: don’t drive.

Always keep an eye on proper air pressure in tyres,in turn you will get increased fuel efficiency.

Reduce size and weight. Make the engine much smaller. Use only manual transmissions. Eliminate parasitic loads like air conditioning.

I had a 1961 VW bug. It got 42 miles per gallon with a 40 hp engine and could go 70 mph. It would carry four adults. Just think what it would do with modern fuel injection and a 5 or six speed transmission.
