NORWAY HYDROGEN HIGHWAY
A hydrogen car rally marks the opening of Norway’s “Hydrogen Highway.” The 560 kilometer stretch from Oslo to Stavanger offers drivers an environmentally-friendly option. A scenic route between Norways capital city Oslo and the North Sea oil hub Stavanger, has been dubbed hydrogen highway. The official opening was marked by a car race among several dozen hydrogen-powered cars. Several hydrogen filling stations along the route are catering to cars with fuel-cells. Unlike electric cars whose batteries require hours of charging, hydrogen cars can be refueled in a matter of minutes, much like conventional cars. Hydrogen cars generate electricity from a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The electricity is then used to power an electric engine. [Henning Solberg, Professional Rally Driver]: “The torque in electric engine is fabulous. So I think in the acceleration, you could get as fast car you want with an electric engine, so that’s the good thing.” Touted as one of the future alternatives to carbon-dioxide emitting gasoline engines, experimental hydrogen engines emit only clean water, though it takes energy to produce hydrogen.
