Speculation on the prospects for electric cars and their impact on the world’s economies make for interesting chatter. As China, the U.S. and European governments step up their stimulus programs to encourage electrification of vehicles, investors are starting to take notice. The question is which industries offer the best investing opportunity.

The Tesla Motors Roadster is expected to deliver 200 to 240 miles per charge, depending on driving conditions and usage. According to General Motors, the Chevrolet Volt, when it finally hits the showrooms, will get 40 miles between charges. The difference is due to the size of the batteries used to power the car. In the Tesla’s case there are more batteries installed on the car, as it depends only on battery power. The Volt will have a small gasoline engine to help recharge the batteries beyond the 40-mile limit. Other hybrid-eclectic vehicles such as the Toyota Prius also use a small gasoline engines to help charge the battery and in some cases add power to the wheels when necessary. The electric cars can be recharged by plugging the car into the power grid using a special adaptor, though some can be charged through the standard household electric outlet.

China has set a goal of producing half-a-million electric cars annually by 2011. To help stimulate this goal they have announced they are investing .4 billion in R&D. The United States has committed billion in stimulus spending to help design and manufacture better batteries. Vehicle manufacturers are receiving help to the tune of billion form the U.S. government to retool their production lines so they can produce larger number of fuel-efficient vehicles, including electric ones.

As more electrified cars and trucks move to the mainstream, they will require some significant changes in several industries if they are to be commercially successful. While some people may believe the move to electric cars is a long way off, the current drive by several major governments should not be ignored. The power trains, battery, and utility industries will each see investing opportunities.

Electric Power Trains

As shown by the success of the Tesla, start-up manufacturers are already making small inroads into the electric car industry. Faced with large legacy engineering and manufacturing processes, the incumbent auto and truck manufacturers must deal with the challenge of operating their existing vehicles while they introduce new vehicles including electric ones. Most of the vehicle manufacturers have outsourced all vehicle components other than engines and drive trains. Electric and hybrid-electric vehicles use significantly different engines and drive trains than your traditional gasoline or diesel powered cars and trucks. As a result, many of these companies must completely redesign their current engineering and manufacturing processes to adapt to the new electric power trains.

Controlling battery design and production will be a core skill that will help to differentiate a car or truck. If your car or truck can go 25% farther on the same charge, you will have a significant competitive advantage. In addition, the technology to manage power will require investment in electronics and software that is foreign to the auto manufacturers.

These new power trains open the door to innovations and start-up firms to capture a significant share of the market, as the traditional vehicle manufacturers wrestle with their transition from their current emphasis to new hybrids and all eclectic drive trains. As a result, many traditional vehicle manufactures will collaborate with or acquire these new firms. For example, Daimler A.G. has acquired nearly a 10 percent stake in Tesla Motors, which remains privately held.

Companies such as BorgWarner Inc., who produces the single-speed gearbox for the Tesla Roadster, will have to adjust their design, engineering, and production approach to meet the challenges of electric vehicles.

Battery Industries

The potential to displace oil as the power source for millions of vehicles is an interesting opportunity. Governments in China, the European Union, and the United States are trying to encourage industries to develop world-class battery technology, so they can become the world leader. Like many industries, the value of the product will shift from the basic components to total systems. Today, batteries are comprised of cells whose chemistry generates electricity. While important, cell chemistry is likely to become a commodity with little to differentiate it from others. For example, battery manufacturers have accomplished the transition from lead battery technology to lithium-based chemistry.

The most successful battery manufacturers will be the ones who move to system level capabilities designed to support specific vehicles. These systems will use electronics and software to offer power and thermal management capabilities that optimize the battery’s performance for a specific vehicle. This will require a more complex engineering and production capability. It will also require the battery manufacturers to work closely with the tier one drive train manufacturers and the auto manufacturers themselves. To succeed the battery manufacturers will have to develop significant new skills and capabilities so they can meet the needs of each vehicle. This will require substantial financial strength as well.

Engineers estimate that the cost of a battery for a plug-in electric car that gets 40 miles before it needs recharging is ,800. This cost increases to ,000 for a car that gets 100 miles per charge. The cost of a battery for a common laptop runs to 0. This gives you an idea of the opportunity for battery manufacturers. If the world were to see 6 million electrified vehicles sold per year, the market could be greater than billion. The cost of a battery will decline as volumes rise and economies of scale are achieved. Some analysts estimate we should expect a six to ten percent drop in the price of an equivalent battery over the next ten years. To achieve this, battery manufacturers will have to invest substantial sums in engineering and manufacturing.

Another challenge the battery manufacturers face will be how they deal with warranty issues. Today, these manufacturers have a relatively small exposure to warranty problems. Probably the largest has been problems associated with several laptop computers that have high failure rates or in some cases caused a fire. While serious, these batteries have a relatively low cost compared to the cost of an electric car’s battery. Replacing an entire battery system and possibly the vehicle will require new approaches as well as very strong balance sheets.

As each of us has witnessed, batteries have a useful life that grows shorter with use. Eventually batteries must be replaced. This creates a new aftermarket opportunity that has not existed. It also creates a disposal problem. Recycling cell phone and laptop batteries is one thing. Putting in place the process to recycle lithium car batteries is quite another. So far, there seems to be very little study on this problem, though it looms quite large as areas of the world move to electric cars. Where there is a problem there is an opportunity

Electric Utilities

Electric vehicles offer new opportunities for the electric utility industry. Most people assume that the plug-in vehicles would be recharged at night. If true, the electric utilities would not have to invest in new infrastructure, as this is an off-peak demand period. However, if drivers of electric vehicles found it necessary to plug their cars in during the day, a peak period use, they could force the utilities to invest in additional infrastructure to meet the higher demand. Companies might want to encourage their employees to drive electric cars by providing plug-in centers at their parking facilities, so drivers could recharge their cars during the day. I could even see some companies claiming this as a company benefit, using the service as a way to help offset their carbon producing facilities elsewhere.

Electric utilities are aware they must invest to create new smart grid capabilities that will help to manage usage of electricity. Electric cars will add to the demand for this new infrastructure. Utility company engineers see this as just another demand placed on the electric grid. However, we might see entrepreneurs employing renewable energy methods to take advantage of these opportunities. Maybe a windmill and or solar panels hooked up to a recharging unit in the parking lot will offer a way for cars to recharge without using the local electric utility.

The Bottom Line

Any time there is a fundamental change in the way an industry operates, new investing opportunities develop. Investors who understand these opportunities can reap the rewards. They also must manage the risks, as they can be large. These opportunities will come from several industries, but especially the drive train and the battery companies. To a lesser extent the electric utilities may also benefit, though not to the same extent, and possibly not at all.

As governments stimulate the move to use of electricity to replace oil, investors should be prepared to find opportunities to benefit. These opportunities will grow with time and the time is now to start your research.

Were you aware of the fact that the electric car was one of the very first automobiles and that electric cars were literally overlooked and ignored in favor of gasoline powered internal combustion vehicles? The concept of electric cars is quite often thought to be a by-product of an oil-weary culture, and environmentally aware society, but it actually is one of the original automobile design concepts. In laymans terms, the concept was primarily an electric carriage without the horse. The first of these electric vehicles were designed and developed in Europe and evolved into efficient, high-capacity, battery-operated autos by the early 1880′s, and yes, that is 1880, not 1980! These electric cars did not require any sort of shifting gears, so had automatic transmissions, so to speak. They also were much quieter for obvious reasons, and of course, much, much cleaner than their rivals, the gas powered, internal combustion engine cars.

The Electric Car History

So what happened?

For starters, as American roads got longer, people developed the need for cars that could be driven for much longer distances, and that could be refueled conveniently. Another factor for the lack of development of these vehicles was the decline in American oil prices, making gas-powered cars cheaper to run. The other major deciding factor on why the gas powered automobiles were chosen over the electric car was that Henry Ford has developed the assembly line manufaacturing model for manufacturing his gas-powered autos, making the gasoline car even more affordable at the time these vehicles came into prominence.

But as this other type of car was all but gone, it was not forgotten. We are still discussing it well over a hundred years later, primarily because it is a great idea, and it does not rely on toxic oil to power it, among other similar drawbacks, like oil to lubricate it and so forth. Now we are making technological advances for which it is making a strong comeback, as the dangers and costs of using and burning oil become looming issues. Listed below are are some of the more conventional modern benefits of the electric automobile.

Advantages of Electric Cars

* Better for the Environment – These cars do not emit any toxic or otherwise harmful exhaust fumes, which makes for much cleaner air and less overall greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, as automobiles account for roughly 25% of our greenhouse gas emissions. There is one potential drawback, which is the unpleasant business of battery disposal when it wears out, but that has been greatly reduced with exciting new technologies which is making the recycling of the batteries to fuel these autos possible. Another advantage of these vehicles is that these clean cars are not going to spring a leak and pollute the environment with oil, or other toxic waste like gas.

Th electric car also uses a very surprisingly limited amount of electricity to charge their batteries, which greatly reduces any concerns about the use of large amounts of electricity generated from fossil fuel elecrtical plants to recharge them, which was one of my major concerns with the use of these vehicles.

* Inexpensive – These cars are generally less expensive to purchase than conventional, gas-powered vehicles. And of course, they do not use gasoline. As the price of gasoline continues to be climb higher and higher, this will result in a great amount of savings for the average gas car user.

* Reliability and Ease of Maintainance – Electrical battery powered cars do not need the conventional oil changes as their counterparts, and they also have fewer moving parts in the engine. This translates into the fact that you don’t have to replace or the belts, cooling hoses, engine spark plugs, exhaust mufflers, and such, leading to better economy to the consumer. Another positive point for these efficient cars is that they have a life expectancy that runs into the millions of miles, and not the hundreds of thousands which conventional cars are generally limited to. According to some trusted sources, the average electric car will last a good 90 years if you drive it 50 miles a day, and at that rate, even driving one of these 100 miles a day or more is a fantastic deal!

* Safety – If you happen to be involved in an accident in one of these cars, there is also no imminent danger of any leaking, flammable fuel igniting at the crash scene, nor toxic waste being spilled on the site and needing special crews for cleaning up the mess.

* Quieter – In our conventional gas powered cars, road and engine noise can make conversation between front and back seat passengers rather difficult, and in some cases, nearly impossible. Another positive aspect of these vehicles is that if you’ve ever stood near a highway, you know how polluting and annoying all that noise is. These old, but new, multi-level efficient electric cars are much, much quieter, allowing a drive through the countryside, park, or neighborhood without creating an annoyance to nearby residents, visitors, or nature and creating any noisy disturbances. Another point is that your passengers can actually talk amongst each other and discuss the scenery or other topics in your electric car without having to strain to speak or listen!

    lectric Car Conversion Kits

Check the turning circle before buying the kit.

There are electric car conversion kits available from retailers and these can be fitted by someone with a good mechanical background. Before buying a conversion kit to fit to your car, it would firstly, be wise to check to see what type of car the electric car conversion kit is suitable for.

Most of the electric cars will do a mileage of between 30 to70, so if you have a daily average mileage that is within this range then having an electric car conversion kit fitted in your vehicle makes a lot of sense.

Another important aspect regarding the electric car conversion kit is to be familiar with which type of hybrid car model its best suited for having it fitted. Having one for short range travel and fitted to a light weight car would be ideal whereas a pickup van or truck is more suitable for utility purposes. Some of the more advanced electric car conversion kits have also been used in cars that can be used for short races and sportier driving, but these are few and far between.

A typical electric car conversion kit may enable a car to travel at speeds of up to 25 mph with a payload of between two and four passengers and costs less than ten thousand dollars.

The electric car conversion kit should be well designed and manufactured and should include the motor, controllers and battery chargers. Add to this the need to change the batteries every year which will add a further three hundred dollars (0) to the cost. However, this is still considerably cheaper than costs for gasoline, anti-freezing, hosing, filters, belts, radiator repairs, exhaust system and tune-up of engines that ordinary gas driven cars entail.

At present, there are very few electric vehicles available and so converting the gasoline driven car with the help of an electric car conversion kit is a good choice to make as building your own electric vehicle is a fun-filled experience that is both rewarding and exhilarating and poses a challenge to the user.

Since electric vehicles do not pollute the environment they are a good alternative technology to the gas driven cars. There are a number of factors that need to be considered before settling on one particular electric car conversion kit.

    * You may begin with selecting the driving range that you intend to travel with your electric vehicle and select a kit that will best serve your purpose.

    * Secondly, there is the need to have proper and adequate set of tools and supplies along with an appropriate amount of free space where to do the conversion.

    * Then, you need to be familiar with the components and know how to remove the ICE components and replace them with the electric vehicle components.

    * Next, install the motor, components, battery box and batteries and also install the propulsion wiring, auxiliary power system and the traction pack changing system as well as displays and controls.

    * Make sure that everything will have been tested before actually putting the electric vehicle in to normal use.

That’s it enjoy the pollution free and cheaper method of transport that is open to you now thanks to your purchase of a electric car conversion kit.

    Thanks

Electric cars are shown up in the news nowadays. The hybrid vehicles and especially the electric cars are talk of the town. The electric car is the best alternative for the petroleum cars. The reason for this includes many statements. The electric cars have a lot of advantages over the old fashioned petroleum cars. The popularity of the electric cars has reached almost all over the world. We are taught in schools about the alternative sources of energy. The alternative sources of energy are solar energy, gas energy, electrical energy, etc. The electric cars are the cars which can run on electricity. Actually the petroleum cars can also be converted into electric cars. It is very easy to convert a petroleum car into electric cars. Most of the petroleum cars are being converted into electrical cars as electrical cars is cost cutting.

It is almost not difficult to understand how an electric car works. The architecture of the electric car is quite different then the petroleum car. A electrical car is consist of lots of wiring. The electrical car has following main components:

    Electric Motor
    Motor Controller
    Batteries

An electric car is powered by an electric motor while a petroleum car is powered by a petroleum engine. This is how an electric car defers from the petroleum car. Instead of a petroleum engine an electric motor is placed inside the electric car. The electric motor gets power from the controller. Number of rechargeable batteries provide power to the controller.

The controller gets the power from the batteries and gives it to the motor. The accelerator pedal is tied with a pair of potentiometers (variable resistors), which provides the signal for the controller how much power it is to to deliver.

The 300 volts dc current is inoput to the controller from the battery and  controller converts it into a maximum of 240 volts AC, three-phase, and  sends to the motor. Inside the controller there is a transistor which turns onand off rapidly. A connector connects these two potentiometers and the padal, when you push on the gas pedal, The controller gets information about how much power to deliver to the electric car’s motor from the potentionmeters. There are two potentiometers for the sake of safety. The controller checks the readings of the both potentiometers to be equal. If they are not, then the controller stops operating. When accsilator is pressed, the controller turns the switch on, and when it is removed, it would turn it off.

The batteries are the main sources of power for the electrical car. Number of rechargeable batteries provide power to the controller. The motor can use both AC and DC batteries. Batteries  run by chemicals such as lithiuem. You can recharge the batteries by just plugging in the wire to the electric socket.

In this article we discussed about the architecture and working of electrical cars. Hope that this information increased your knowledge about the electrical cars.

The best solution for pollution and the other such issues is the Electric cars. Electronic Cars are becoming the latest trend and are very environment friendly.

The main differences between the Electric Cars and the ignition combustion vehicle are:

An electric motor is 400% to 600% more efficient compared and uses one-half the fossil-fuel resources an Ignition control engine consumes. Electric Cars produce zero emissions at the point of use and 5% to 10% of the emissions of an Ignition Control engine per mile traveled. All of the Electric Car’s emissions occur at a (oil or coal fueled) power plant, which runs 400% to 500% more efficiently than an Ignition Control Engine and scrubs its own exhaust. Electric Cars can use electricity from anywhere including sustainable energy resources (wind and sun). Electric Cars are simple, silent, and affordable to operate.

It is a major step for an automobile to no longer emit exhaust gases. Many wonder if the electric Cars are actually no emission cars or if it is emitted in some other place. In fact, the idea is nearly inconceivable and that is one of the main reasons why consumers love zero-emission vehicles. Although they are not driving a solar-powered car, they will be helping the sun to shine through clear skies.

In the literal sense, the Electric Cars are the “emission-elsewhere” cars. The electricity to power the car has to be generated somewhere. Sometimes the electric energy is available from sustainable energy sources like wind, solar, and water power however; the bulk comes from coal- and oil-fueled power plants. Hence it can be considered as emission elsewhere vehicles.

This has been scrutinized extensively by the U.S. Department of Energy and several California agencies charged with air-quality management.

Electric Cars are very efficient; a pound of the battery has 1/100 of the energy of a pound of gasoline. On average, a 30 mpg Ignition Control Engine car uses only 5% to 10% of the energy of its fuel, whereas the Electric Car converts 70% to 80% of the battery’s pack into propulsion, for the same mile.

The “electric vehicle” is a household phrase in the U.S today however; the basics of Electric Propulsion were virtually unknown 17 years ago.

An electric vehicle is one that uses an electric motor instead of an engine, and batteries instead of a fuel tank and gasoline. The electric motor is the size of a five-gallon water bottle and bolts right to the stock transmission. The batteries are similar in size and shape to the one used to start the car’s engine however; the number is more. The accelerator pedal is connected to a “pot box,” which operates the electronic controller. Pressing the accelerator smoothly delivers power to the motor in proportion to the amount of pedal you give it.

The electric car is only an example of an electric vehicle. An electric-assist bicycle or an electric motorcycle is also an Electric vehicle. A trolley and the San Francisco BART subway train are Electric Vehicles. A solar-powered car, Formula electric racer is also an Electric Vehicle. A. The world is more than ready for Electric Vehicles. In fact, it uses electric motors everywhere. Electric propulsion is not a new technology. The modern locomotive is diesel-electric; its diesel engine-generator supplies the electricity to power the electric motor drive train. Electric motors also power elevators, industrial assembly lines, ventilation and air-conditioning units, refrigerators, blow dryers, washers and dryers, computers and printers, CD players and auto tape decks, and pumps. Ironically, an electric motor is also needed to start an automobile’s engine. Wherever silent, efficient, reliable service is needed, you will find an electric motor at work.

So, you think you would like to buy an electric car?  Maybe, you’ve seen lots of stories in the press about electric car technology being the way forward, or you want to reduce your environmental footprint, or perhaps you just want something a little different and think they look cool.  Across the world in recent years, major advances have been made with electric cars, however what does this mean for someone wanting to buy one, particularly if you are based in the UK.  What should a new electric car buyer consider?

At a basic level, buying an electric car is extremely similar to buying a standard petrol or diesel car.  The same basic isses apply and you want to think about:

What will you primarily be using the car for?  This impacts on everything. Do you need to carry lots of passengers or kit, think size, number of seats, storage space? How far and at what speeds do you regularly drive? Will you need to be able to park it near work? How will you charge it?

    Electric Car Performance

The performance (speed, distance, charging time etc) of electric cars varies considerably.  In general, the better performing the car the more expensive they are e.g. the Tesla Roadster - great performance but a serious price tag too (you won’t get much change from £100,000 to buy one in the the UK!!).  However, manufacturers are beginning to offer a range of vehicles from the 2 seater city runabout, to larger 4 and 5 seater saloons and MPVs, up to small commercial vans.  You can buy a new small electric car in the UK for under £10,000.  For those interested in cars specifically available in the UK and how they compare you can find a great electric car comparision tool here.

Current electric vehicles aren’t really ideal for that weekday 100 mile motorway commute (not yet!).  Electric cars are really a city option.  This is partly due to limits on maximum speeds (most topping out at around 50mph) but also the related issue of battery charging.

    Infrastructure for Electric Cars

Most electric cars can only go some 50 miles on one charge.  Cities are also where the infrastructure to support electric cars is concentrated.  In the UK, we are talking London first and foremost although there are some limited options for free electric car charging elsewhere in the UK e.g. Manchester, Bristol etc.   In many places electric cars also qualify for free parking and are exempt from things like congestion charges.

Following on from this is also the issue of servicing and maintaining your electric car.  This is going to be easiest in the big city where you purchased your car.  Hopefully, however some of these infrastructure restrictions will be lifted sooner rather than later.

    Buying an Electric Car

Once you have decided what you need your electric car for and how you plan to use it you then want to:

Decide what you can afford Read reviews, compare prices and shop around. Speak to dealers – there are a number of retailers now based in London who will be keen for your business. Remember it is also possible to buy second hand.

Electric cars are not cheap to buy however they are cheap to run.  A slightly cheaper option though would be a second hand electric car.  Although, the second hand car market is extremely small there are some cars out there.  Just remember to look for a full service history, a warranty if possible and check the battery age (try and get the seller to put in a new battery to help sweeten the deal!)

Lastly, it is worth noting that the electric car market is not like the conventional car market, changes are more rapid. New (and better) electric car models are coming out every year, it may be worth waiting 12-24 months to get the right electric car for you.

Electric cars are a variety of electric vehicle (EV). Generally it refers to road-going automobiles powered by electricity. While the electric car’s power source is not explicitly an on-board battery, an electric car powered by sunlight is a solar car, an electric car powered by a gasoline generator is a form of hybrid car.
cars with electric motors powered by other energy sources are Generally Referred to by a different name:

Internatonal Standard (ISO 8713:2002) electric car is known in two types, including; Zero Emission Vehicles (Zev) and Low Emission Vehicles (LEV). Electric cars are categorized into Zero Emission Vehicles are Batterai Cars (Battery Operate) and car fuel cell. While that is categorized into LEV propulsion system is a car that combines the conventional engine with an electric motor (car Hybride).

The Basic Principle Of Electric Cars Engines

If you spot an electric car on the street, it is nearly impossible to tell that the car is powered by an electric motor because EVs (electric vehicles) look exactly like a gasoline powered car. The only other way to find an electric motor powered car is the excellent level of silence that an electric engine has!
For those who have gasoline cars, their engine bay features so many boxes and pipes which look like a complicated plumbing work but with electric cars,

In an EV, there is an ac charger which will charge the battery unit. Once you start the engine, the power will be directly delivered from batteries to the car. Instead of a gasoline meter, an EV will have a volt meter that will show you the charge. If the volt meter shows a low charge warning, it means that you should recharge your car immediately. The EV motor do not have clutch as the motor has limited control over its power output. Instead of an accelerator, it is a potentiometer that allows you to increase or decrease the speed.

To make the air conditioner work, there will be an additional battery source and for heater, a water heater will be fixed in the engine bay. The power windows and other accessories also use the electric charge and replacements are made. The potentiometer used in an electric car is similar to a fan regulator and works based on the resistance principle. However, increasing or decreasing the speed can’t help you to achieve a higher or lower mileage as the power output as well as energy consumption will be the same.

This is how EVs work, which is a very straightforward principle. There is no doubt that electric cars can help you to save a lot of money that you used to spent on fuel.

    Edison’s Electric (Year 1889)

There is some debate about who built the first electric car in the world, credit is given to the Scottish inventor Robert Anderson, who built an electric car with energy unit energy sources of non-rechargeable, on the same year, the Dutch inventor Sibrandus Starting create an electric vehicle, as is done also by Thomas Davenport of Vermont. And it has been around since at least half a century before the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.

    GM EV1

The General Motors EV1 was an electric car produced and leased by the General Motors Corporation from 1996 to 1999. It was the first mass-produced and purpose-designed electric vehicle of the modern era from a major automaker, and the first GM car designed to be an electric vehicle from the outset. The decision to mass-produce an electric car came after GM received a favorable reception for its 1990 Impact electric concept car, upon which the design of the EV1 drew heavily. Inspired partly by the Impact’s perceived potential for success,

    Tesla Roadster
    (Year 2008-Present)

The Tesla Roadster is a battery electric vehicle (BEV) sports car produced by the electric car firm Tesla Motors in California. The Roadster is the only highway-capable electric vehicle in serial production (as opposed to prototype or evaluation fleet production) in North America or Europe. Tesla had produced more than 1,200 Roadsters sold in at least 28 countries as of July 2010.[2]  Tesla began producing right-hand-drive Roadsters in early 2010 for the British Isles, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Roadster is the first production automobile to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first production BEV (all-electric) to travel more than 200 miles (320 km) per charge.[

    Chevrolet Volt
    (Year 2011)

The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle being produced by the Chevrolet  division of General Motors and will be launched in November 2010 as a 2011 model. Its propulsion system is based on GM's new Voltec (formerly known as E-Flex) electric automobile platform, which differs significantly from GM's earlier BAS Hybrid and Two-Mode Hybrid systems. The Volt is capable of traveling between 25 to 50 miles (40 to 80 km) solely powered by the electrical energy stored in its on-board battery pack.
