Electric Cars and Rising Gasoline Prices

Rising gasoline prices may just make other forms of alternative means of transportation become more attractive. One of the ways not to be affected by the rising prices of gas is to have an alternative means of travel. Of course, saving up on gasoline use may help in some way, but such actions may still leave one affected with the rising prices of gas. A better way would be trying to use a mode of transportation aside from one that makes use of fuel aside from gasoline. One such example is the use of an electric car.
An electric car is one type of an alternative vehicle. It makes use of electricity as its primary power source. Instead of an internal combustion engine, the electric car, also commonly called as an EV or electric vehicle, has an electric motor to make the vehicle move. It is an alternative fuel vehicle that does not use refined fossil oil for fuel.
Electric cars get electricity for power by means of electric battery packs built on board. One of the advantages of using electric vehicles or EV’s is that they are environmentally friendly. Unlike fossil fuel that emits a number of pollutants into the air when being used, the use of electricity for power does not do so, except that the power plants that may produce them do. But with using electric cars, the emission of harmful pollutants may be reduced substantially. Less cars using fossils fuel and gasoline would help make this possible. And someday, when more electric power is sourced from nuclear, solar, wind and hydro-electric power plants, pollutant emissions will even be reduced more.
Performance-wise, electric cars offer smoother and noiseless operation that cars relying on gasoline. Electric cars provide stronger acceleration and the electric motor requires lesser maintenance than the internal combustion engines of cars using gasoline and other fossil fuels. By using electricity through batteries, energy conversion is more efficient. Electric motors makes use of 75 percent of the chemical energy converted into electricity to run the car. Internal combustion engines or ICE’s only are able to make use about 20 percent of the energy stored in gasoline to power the vehicle.
If most think that the electric car is a recent invention, then they are mistaken. The electric vehicle is in fact one of the earliest vehicles known to exist. Small electric powered vehicles even predate the development of the diesel and gasoline engines. The earliest electric carriage was built between 1832 and 1839. The development of other electric cars also increased for some time during the 1860′s along with the improvement of the storage battery. It was even the electric cars that held many of the speed and distance records during this time. But unfortunately, the advent of the internal combustion engines came during the early 1900′s, which led to the decrease in the use of electric cars.
With the appearance of the more powerful and affordable diesel and gasoline powered cars starting in the early 1900′s, the market for electric cars slowly disappeared. Although there were still electric cars being made, those that do exist were being produced for specialized applications. One of the most common use for the electric vehicle today may be found in the golf carts as a primary mode of compact transport in golf courses. But because of the rising gasoline prices as well as the worsening pollution, there has been an renewed demand for the less polluting alternative electric vehicles in recent years.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Hybrid Cars
| US $4.49 End Date: Wednesday Feb-22-2012 14:05:16 PST Buy It Now for only: US $4.49 Buy it now | Add to watch list |
As car makers are increasingly thinking of producing hybrid vehicles, it’s time to think if these cars are really going to be the cars of the future? However, ‘hybrid’ seems to be the latest advancement in the auto world. Hybrid cars are known to enhance mileage figures, and hence are believed to be better than the traditional cars. In this article, let’s see if the hybrid technology is really worth the praise.
Hybrid cars come with dual engines: gasoline and electric powered engines. The gasoline motor does not directly power the car. Instead, it charges the electric engine which in turn runs the car. The first of its kind was made in a foreign land. In India, Honda was the first car maker to come up with the technology in its Honda Civic Hybrid.
Many other Indian auto majors have followed suit. Toyota, Tata Motors and Hyundai may soon come up with hybrid engines in their cars in India. With the introduction of the new technology, the international car market has witnessed a major change. However, the feedback has been both positive and negative making it difficult to judge if the introduction of many more hybrid automobiles is viable.
Let us first look at the advantages of hybrids:
• Compare the pollution levels caused by hybrids with that of petrol automobiles. You’ll know in a jiffy that the emissions gushing out of petrol vehicles are way higher than their hybrid counterparts.
• Hybrids draw lesser tax than the gasoline-powered automobiles.
• Introduction of hybrids will also reduce dependency on oil which is a fast-depleting natural oil resource.
• Though expensive to buy, hybrids don’t need fuel re-fills every now and then, thus saving the fuel expenditure.
• The mileage obtained is much better.
• There is no friction in the engine to damage the spare parts, and hence, no wearing out of these parts.
• Maintenance cost is considerably low.
• Regenerative braking in these vehicles serves as a generator and charger to charge the batteries.
• Tyres of hybrid cars are harder and more inflated as compared to conventional cars.
Time to have a look at the disadvantages of hybrid cars:
• These cars being expensive, arranging money for the initial purchase becomes difficult for the average man.
• Hybrid technology is fairly new and hasn’t been tested well. Only time can tell what obstacles may occur while driving.
• Hybrids are lighter than conventional cars, hence making them more prone to accidents. In case of a collision with regular gasoline automobiles, hybrids and their occupants suffer greater damage.
• Heavy storms are capable of blowing off hybrids from the ground.
• Hybrids may be eco-friendly on the road, but produce twice the amount of pollution during the manufacturing process.
• The accelerative power is relatively low.
• Winters or cold weather can influence the working of batteries, thus hampering the hybrid’s performance.

Electric Car Popularity – Reasons People Prefer Electric Cars To Gas Cars
| US $14.99 End Date: Wednesday Feb-22-2012 12:49:56 PST Buy It Now for only: US $14.99 Buy it now | Add to watch list |
Electric cars are not a new concept as we think, people hve been using them for a long time .In fact in the 1900′s people used more electric cars than cars run on gas.In the 1920′s when the popularity for cars was growing, gas was very costly.Starting a gas run car was also a very tedious process, there was no key to ignite the engine, in fact a rod used to fit into the front of the car which had to be turned round and round to get the car started.
Not only were gas run cars tedious to start , they emitted alot of smoke and were very noisy, as either the mufflers used were not good or there were no mufflers at all. Beleive it or not , at one point of time electric cars were so popular that there were about 50,000 electric cars running on the streets of United States .
As new discoveries were underway to make gasoline cheaper, electric cars started disappearing from the market. The discovery of the electric starter made way for the exit of the crank and the car was started with a key.A car run on gas could travel more distance than the electric car. Thus cars run on gas started getting more pouplar than the electric car.
Now, once again because of the awareness towards protecting the environment and reducing the dangers caused by the emission of the greenhouse gases ” green ” electric cars are once again getting
popularized.
Gasoline is not used to run an electric car, it runs on the energy stored in batteries in the car. 12,14 or more batteries may be needed to run the car.The operation of the electric car is similar to that a remote controlled one since both have an electric motor that turns the wheel and a battery that that runs the motor.
Charging of the batteries can either be done all night or some cars need to be plugged into a standard electric wall. There are some which need a large electric outlet, something like what is used for an electric stove or electric clothes dryer. These are the various ways electricity is stored in the cars.
The batteries used to run the cars have to be either lead acid batteries, similar to those used in torch lights or ni-cad (nickel-cadium) used to run portable viodeo recorders or video games , only much larger in size. A lot of work is going on to upgrade the batteries to hold more energy and last longer. By the time the fifth graders in 2001 are ready to drive we should have electric cars which will be able to travel 150 to 200 miles before needing to get recharged.
Manufacturers of cars and scientists are making constant endeavours to make better cars which will be more eco-friendly. The revival of electric cars and the challenge to make them more attractive is on in a big way and enticing more people to switch over to electric cars.

Prospects for Electric Cars
| US $56.99 (0 Bid) End Date: Wednesday Feb-22-2012 12:27:36 PST Bid now | Add to watch list |
Speculation on the prospects for electric cars and their impact on the world’s economies make for interesting chatter. As China, the U.S. and European governments step up their stimulus programs to encourage electrification of vehicles, investors are starting to take notice. The question is which industries offer the best investing opportunity.
The Tesla Motors Roadster is expected to deliver 200 to 240 miles per charge, depending on driving conditions and usage. According to General Motors, the Chevrolet Volt, when it finally hits the showrooms, will get 40 miles between charges. The difference is due to the size of the batteries used to power the car. In the Tesla’s case there are more batteries installed on the car, as it depends only on battery power. The Volt will have a small gasoline engine to help recharge the batteries beyond the 40-mile limit. Other hybrid-eclectic vehicles such as the Toyota Prius also use a small gasoline engines to help charge the battery and in some cases add power to the wheels when necessary. The electric cars can be recharged by plugging the car into the power grid using a special adaptor, though some can be charged through the standard household electric outlet.
China has set a goal of producing half-a-million electric cars annually by 2011. To help stimulate this goal they have announced they are investing .4 billion in R&D. The United States has committed billion in stimulus spending to help design and manufacture better batteries. Vehicle manufacturers are receiving help to the tune of billion form the U.S. government to retool their production lines so they can produce larger number of fuel-efficient vehicles, including electric ones.
As more electrified cars and trucks move to the mainstream, they will require some significant changes in several industries if they are to be commercially successful. While some people may believe the move to electric cars is a long way off, the current drive by several major governments should not be ignored. The power trains, battery, and utility industries will each see investing opportunities.
Electric Power Trains
As shown by the success of the Tesla, start-up manufacturers are already making small inroads into the electric car industry. Faced with large legacy engineering and manufacturing processes, the incumbent auto and truck manufacturers must deal with the challenge of operating their existing vehicles while they introduce new vehicles including electric ones. Most of the vehicle manufacturers have outsourced all vehicle components other than engines and drive trains. Electric and hybrid-electric vehicles use significantly different engines and drive trains than your traditional gasoline or diesel powered cars and trucks. As a result, many of these companies must completely redesign their current engineering and manufacturing processes to adapt to the new electric power trains.
Controlling battery design and production will be a core skill that will help to differentiate a car or truck. If your car or truck can go 25% farther on the same charge, you will have a significant competitive advantage. In addition, the technology to manage power will require investment in electronics and software that is foreign to the auto manufacturers.
These new power trains open the door to innovations and start-up firms to capture a significant share of the market, as the traditional vehicle manufacturers wrestle with their transition from their current emphasis to new hybrids and all eclectic drive trains. As a result, many traditional vehicle manufactures will collaborate with or acquire these new firms. For example, Daimler A.G. has acquired nearly a 10 percent stake in Tesla Motors, which remains privately held.
Companies such as BorgWarner Inc., who produces the single-speed gearbox for the Tesla Roadster, will have to adjust their design, engineering, and production approach to meet the challenges of electric vehicles.
Battery Industries
The potential to displace oil as the power source for millions of vehicles is an interesting opportunity. Governments in China, the European Union, and the United States are trying to encourage industries to develop world-class battery technology, so they can become the world leader. Like many industries, the value of the product will shift from the basic components to total systems. Today, batteries are comprised of cells whose chemistry generates electricity. While important, cell chemistry is likely to become a commodity with little to differentiate it from others. For example, battery manufacturers have accomplished the transition from lead battery technology to lithium-based chemistry.
The most successful battery manufacturers will be the ones who move to system level capabilities designed to support specific vehicles. These systems will use electronics and software to offer power and thermal management capabilities that optimize the battery’s performance for a specific vehicle. This will require a more complex engineering and production capability. It will also require the battery manufacturers to work closely with the tier one drive train manufacturers and the auto manufacturers themselves. To succeed the battery manufacturers will have to develop significant new skills and capabilities so they can meet the needs of each vehicle. This will require substantial financial strength as well.
Engineers estimate that the cost of a battery for a plug-in electric car that gets 40 miles before it needs recharging is ,800. This cost increases to ,000 for a car that gets 100 miles per charge. The cost of a battery for a common laptop runs to 0. This gives you an idea of the opportunity for battery manufacturers. If the world were to see 6 million electrified vehicles sold per year, the market could be greater than billion. The cost of a battery will decline as volumes rise and economies of scale are achieved. Some analysts estimate we should expect a six to ten percent drop in the price of an equivalent battery over the next ten years. To achieve this, battery manufacturers will have to invest substantial sums in engineering and manufacturing.
Another challenge the battery manufacturers face will be how they deal with warranty issues. Today, these manufacturers have a relatively small exposure to warranty problems. Probably the largest has been problems associated with several laptop computers that have high failure rates or in some cases caused a fire. While serious, these batteries have a relatively low cost compared to the cost of an electric car’s battery. Replacing an entire battery system and possibly the vehicle will require new approaches as well as very strong balance sheets.
As each of us has witnessed, batteries have a useful life that grows shorter with use. Eventually batteries must be replaced. This creates a new aftermarket opportunity that has not existed. It also creates a disposal problem. Recycling cell phone and laptop batteries is one thing. Putting in place the process to recycle lithium car batteries is quite another. So far, there seems to be very little study on this problem, though it looms quite large as areas of the world move to electric cars. Where there is a problem there is an opportunity
Electric Utilities
Electric vehicles offer new opportunities for the electric utility industry. Most people assume that the plug-in vehicles would be recharged at night. If true, the electric utilities would not have to invest in new infrastructure, as this is an off-peak demand period. However, if drivers of electric vehicles found it necessary to plug their cars in during the day, a peak period use, they could force the utilities to invest in additional infrastructure to meet the higher demand. Companies might want to encourage their employees to drive electric cars by providing plug-in centers at their parking facilities, so drivers could recharge their cars during the day. I could even see some companies claiming this as a company benefit, using the service as a way to help offset their carbon producing facilities elsewhere.
Electric utilities are aware they must invest to create new smart grid capabilities that will help to manage usage of electricity. Electric cars will add to the demand for this new infrastructure. Utility company engineers see this as just another demand placed on the electric grid. However, we might see entrepreneurs employing renewable energy methods to take advantage of these opportunities. Maybe a windmill and or solar panels hooked up to a recharging unit in the parking lot will offer a way for cars to recharge without using the local electric utility.
The Bottom Line
Any time there is a fundamental change in the way an industry operates, new investing opportunities develop. Investors who understand these opportunities can reap the rewards. They also must manage the risks, as they can be large. These opportunities will come from several industries, but especially the drive train and the battery companies. To a lesser extent the electric utilities may also benefit, though not to the same extent, and possibly not at all.
As governments stimulate the move to use of electricity to replace oil, investors should be prepared to find opportunities to benefit. These opportunities will grow with time and the time is now to start your research.
