This phenomenon is due to the excessive amount of algae, a plant plankton, that grows as photosynthesis occurs and it actually destroys the water quality. The Water Beetle, a water purifying device developed by Masaki ENVEC, was last year’s new energy award prize winner and offers a solution to this problem. As the Water Beetle churns water so that it flows in every direction, the warm surface water flows towards the bottom. When this surface water moves downward, photosynthesis is obstructed, and as a result, a decrease in algae occurs. In addition, as the water from the bottom rises to the top, ultra-violet rays sterilize the water and prevent a degradation of water quality. All you have to do to install the Water Beetle is submerge the two anchors in the water and connect the Water Beetle to those anchors with ropes. The water beetle uses a screw propeller to slowly move large volumes of water, and compared to air or pump type devices, it can churn the equivalent amount of water using only a sixth as much electricity. Since the Water Beetle uses solar energy, running costs are minimal. Three types of Water Beetles are available to accommodate a variety of applications including everything from use in areas as small as park ponds to use in large areas like dams.
